Are you using 9.0c 32 bit? .. I don't know anything about HMC150 personally but from what I've read here others are using this footage in 9.0c 32 bit with no problem... In my experience, no video track (but audio) means you don't have the right codec and the footage needs to be converted (transcoded) to a different format. That seems wrong with the HMC150 -- but again, I have no personal experience with that camera.

If you just installed V9 why not try a de-install and re-install. Can't hurt.

I've had one example of a bad install on Vegas. Strange things occurred. Worth a shot. Doesn't take long to do. Hopefully someone else with HMC150 experience can help.

I'm running Vista 64 and my HMC150 footage shows up properly in Vegas 8 and Vegas 9, but 9 is pretty unstable with it, especially 9c 64 bit.

both installs are perfect.

i do get memory bugs with red framed timeline clips, and ive had media misreferenced, so entire clips are literally blank..

9 has ALWAYS been an issue o nboth my workstations... we dont bother with it anymore, but it still doesnt explain why v8 can run HMc material without skippin a beat, while v9 can barely load up..

Hi,

Can't help you with 32XP, I'm working on Vista64 (i7).

HMC151 is my base video camera and very often I have to work simoultanously with AVCHD from HMC in both : 32 and 64 bit instances of Vegas 9c. Works properly and is very stabil. I have not seen ANY problem during last 6 monts.

Before, I have some general problem with imported videos or stills in Vegas but I have discovered that VISTA - without my permission - has updated nVidia Quadro FX1800 drivers. This update was not fully succesffull and as an effect I had two nVidia managers present in Task Manager. This was a reason of problem. I have deinstaled drives, then I have cleaned registry and installed newest version of driver personally. After that I have blocked nVidia driver update in Windows Update. From this point system and Vegas is stabil as rock. Mayby nature of your problem is similar.

Best regards,

I am interested in why your results are so much better than mine? Do you shoot in PH mode with your HMC151? Do you always use the same in-camera format settings?

I had one large project that I started out with HMC150 AVCHD footage shot at 720p30. I had so much trouble with it, about half way through the project I transcoded all the footage to MXF and replaced all the project clips with their corresponding MXF. Everything worked smoothly with only a very occasional lockup. Then, as I was putting finishing touches on my project I inadvertantly added one of the MTS files to the timeline. Vegas immediately went bonkers - I couldn't even do a ram preview of a small section of that clip without Vegas locking up. I realized what I had done, replaced the clip with it's MXF and all was stable again.

My Vista64 i7 has been rock solid with every other application I use - mostly Adobe CS4 products and Lightroom. It was stable with Vegas 8, but not with 9c.

HI,

My base format is 720p50 in PH mode. I'm using the same avi parameters from other applications (like Bluff Titler). This same format is set up as a project template. I can't remember project with different in-camera format settings files - maybe this is the reason : I always use the same. I have Barry Green HMC150 book and I have red about AVCHD LongGOP issues (which causes that in some cases less frames means better quality in terms of noise or artifacts) but after some test I have returned to my base format : I just couldn't see difference. I dont use meta data in camera and dont use proxy on timeline. My worflow is usually the same and constists of AVCHD, mov and avi files (plus very seldom some stills). As I said before : I can't see any problem.

Mayby you should repeat this thread - I can't believe that there are only three of us using Panasonic HMC151 on this forum.

I have HMC 151 (PAL) and always shoot 720/50p.
As I use 2 Canon HFS 100 as B-cams I always do mxf intermediates of all three cams for smooth edit.
When finished I put the original mts files on timeline and render.
This is the least unstable workflow I tested so far but I still get
Vegas and even window crashes with Vegas 9c/64.
The crashes are quite unlogical and can happen during edit, render and even when importing mxf-files to project media but at least I can
get the job done after some restarts now and then.
Its important to save veg files often though during edit.
I run win 7/64.

Thanks for the additional info RRA. It could be any number of differences between your PC and mine. But for starters, here is what I have. Are you significantly different in any area:

- Dell XPS Studio 435MT i7 940 2.03 GHz (not overclocked)
- 6GB ram
- ATI Radeon 4870 gpu with 512MB
- Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2
- McAfee AntiVirus (soon to be removed, but have problems even when this is disabled)
- Vegas 9c 64bit (and 32bit)

Hi,

My config :

- board MSI X58 PRO SLI
- processor i7 975 3.33 GHz (not overclocked)
- 12 GB RAM DDR3 PC-1333 Corsair (triple channel)
- nVidia Quadro FX 1800 768MB (hardware antialliasing)
- 4 X HDD Seagate ST3500320NS (no RAID, no indexing)
- Bella Vegas keyboard
- one monitor P&P on default Vista driver
- Vista Ultimate SP 2 64
- Norton Internet Security
- Vegas 9c 64bit (and 32bit for Cinescore and some old plugins).

I had some problems with RAID controller and have decided to remove RAID and work with backup software. This same with indexing of files on discs : Vista is too creative and is able to destroy registry by herself. With RAID and indexing I had continous problem with system of files. Also antivirus is able to generate mess (see Event Log / Inspections Results = Failed, file destroyed or improper shortcut to disc location). I have measered disc read/write performance (about 105 MB/s) it is enough for me. To improve Vegas performance I keep system and temp on one disc, resourcers for projects on second and render to third disc (to avoid simoultanous reading and writing to the same device). My projects are usually 10 min long, so this setup is optimal.

I have specific error in my config (I have sent it to SONY CS support, but they can't recreate it) : my plugin manager in Vegas is not able to remember folders which I create to make some order in plugin chains. After rebooting Vegas folders dissappar.

As you can see there are some inconvenience but AVCHD is running properly.

I would ask you (or other HMC151 users) : did you use Blacmagic Intensity PRO to capture video directly from HMC151 via HDMI ? I know this is possible to achieve 4:2:2 color depth and uncompressed video files. I'm trying to prepare setup for this task. I'm scared a little bit of transfers to disc, it is very demanding : 720x50p need minimally 92 MB/s (recommended 105 MB/s) so I'm on the edge of disc capability... Do you have some comments ? HDD recommendations ?

Best regards,

RRA

RRA, nice system there!

I also am not running RAID, and do nightly backups to Windows Home Server running on my old Pentium video PC. I just stuck in a bunch of hard drives and WHS does a great job backing up all three of my networked PCs.

You were smart to go with 12GB RAM. I am going to upgrade mine to at least 12GB. I wasn't thinking when I bought mine but I have recently read that you need about 2GB per core for video, and with hyperthreading we have eight cores. With Vegas I have tried setting it one core, but instability problems persist.

The other thing that interests me in your configuration is Norton. I have another post here about the new Norton (rewritten from the ground up in 2009) and the good reviews it is getting. My McAfee is a real dog and might be causing some of my instability problems. My question: do you leave Norton running when you are editing and/or rendering?

I have not used Blackmagic Intensity Pro. So far I only capture 4:2:0 using the Vegas Device Explorer. One pleasant surprise with Device Explorer - I did multi-day event where I had 6 different SD cards filled with clips. The automatic renaming that Device Explorer does sure makes life easier since you don't end up overwriting same-name clips in your project.

I hope you will post here if you do capture directly via HDMI - I'd like to hear how it goes.

Hi,

Usually Norton is running during editing and rendering. My tasks are relatively short (max 10 min of movie, but mostly are very short (1 min or even 15 seconds for outdoor monitor)) and I just have to remember to disable "background operations" in Norton if I want to leave computer alone. But my casual job is actually very comfortable and very often I'm surfing on net or doing something in Office during rendering. What I said about Norton is probably more connected with Vista : Norton starts his drivers on very early stage of system loading and uses all mechanism of Vista's drivers and dll caching. If Vista is not able to manage this properly (and unfortunatelly very often IS NOT able) then problem is ready.

If you have to copy with effectiveness of rendering try experiment : select max preview resolution (suitable to project and the same as render template), select piece of project on timeline, build dynamic RAM preview, dont change anything and start rendering the same piece of timeline. You will probaly see extremelly fast rendering (acctually dump of memory) but also you will be able to make assesment where is bootleneck in your system. I can see that even during dynamic RAM preview Vegas (better say Vista) is engaging swap file (even if I have 10GB selected in option as reseved for RAM preview and (this is the most importand) even if I turn OFF swap file in Vista !!!). This is the reason that utilisation degree of processor during rendering to RAM is going down (it looks like SAW shape). And during rendering you can see how NOT important is time of writing to disc. I can recommend you to add RAM to you system but I believe that it's very big time to change Vista to Winows 7.

Best regards,
