AVCHD Vs. HDV

I am a serious hobbyist mostly shooting childrens' sporting events and home videos. I am looking to upgrade from miniDV to ? Hi Def New cameras are coming out in March from both Canon and Sony. I edit in Vegas and have recently apgraded to Vegas 8. As far as quality and ease of editing goes, what is the recommendation as far as AVCHD vs. HDV format.

Canon HV20/ 30 seem to have received lot of positive score. Please advise.

P.S. Since my teenage children will be shooting as well, I am looking for a small/medium sized camera.

HDV = better quality and easier to edit.

I agree with Bob. I would guess that someday avchd will have its day, but it's not here yet. AVCHD is harder to work with, won't "smart render", and I don't know about others but I tend to see more breakup on avchd on the faster moving scenes and pans.

Easier to edit I agree.. as for the other comment.. it depends on taste... lol

AVC INtra is another story though... ooooooh droooooool...

Pana just annoucned successor to DVX using AVCHD... if only they offered AVC INtra, then it woulda ben a killer.. i dont think theyre targeting the EX1... not yet anyway...

I suspect you would be happy with pretty much any of the small-form HDV cameras. I would suggest you also check out the Sony cameras. I have an HC3 and love the thing. On this board Spot has recently mentioned that the Sony cameras were more rugged than the Canon HV20, in his experience. That might be a significant factor in your case, where kids would be using the camera also.

I completely agree. I have the HC3, HC7 and the HV20. The HV20 certainly does give a good quality image.... but that's about all. The Sony cams I find are all round much better balanced in terms of quality and overall options. The image quality is slightly better with the canon but you really have to take a good strong look to notice the difference.

Over all, I am MUCH more satisfied with my Sony's than my canon.

1) Based on your valuable experience, I am leaning towards Sony HDV. Could anyone suggest any models including the ones that are coming out right now.

2) Are there any 3 CCD/CMOS sensors in the cameras that are in my "size" range.
