if i several projects, each one into avi files, then put them all together in one project to render into a mpeg 2 file, will i lose a lot of quality, and also (DVDA question) i have rendered a project as meg2 but still the optimize thingy has an explanation mark, how do i avoid this

When you compress to MPEG-2, you have no choice but to throw something away, so yes, you will lose some quality. How much depends on a number of factors such as the bit rate used, quality of the source material, etc.

When you rendered to MPEG-2, did you use on of the DVD Arch templates? If not, that may explain the "!" on the optimize screen. Normally optimize will tell you what the issue is if you select the item in question.
