AVI 4m57s weirdness

VegasPro8c, WinXPpro32.

On my main PC, with fresh install of all software, bog standard, whenever I 'Render As' .AVI (PAL or PAL widescreen) any material approx 20mins long, the resultant file plays in it's entirety fine within Vegas; however Windows Media Player and other DirectShow players refuse to play past 4min57secs; also Explorer Properties show the length as 4min57secs. AVI files captured from Tape all work fine. AVI files rendered previous to this install all work correct.

Same material rendered on Laptop work fine.

Settings and software installed are identical on both machines, except Windows Media Player is V11 on PC, and V10 on Laptop.

Any ideas?

Make sure that "Strictly conform to AVI2 specification" is not checked.

Yep I tried unchecking that; got a message during render that allowed filesize was exceeded, and render self-aborted; besides it is checked on the Laptop.

Is/are the drive(s) formatted as FAT32 instead of NTFS?
Are you rendering to something other than C:\My Documents?

Drive formatted NTFS, and is not system drive; no FAT32 in sight; have tried other drives just in case, result same.

Problem 'solved' - uninstall & reinstall Vegas seems to have fixed it - very strange as the only setting I ever changed from default in last install was to check General Preference "Use Microsoft DV codecs" - same change this time and suddenly all is well.

Go figure.

Thanks but no thanks :-)
Glad you got it resolved.

...check General Preference "Use Microsoft DV codecs"

I always disable this particular feature as I vaguely recall someone saying on this forum that it wasn't an option you'd normally want.

"Use Microsoft DV codecs"

I've always checked it as the result seems to be more compatible with the video player in the DAW where I do all my music recording & mixing - mostly I just use Vegas to convert supplied QuickTime files (from Avid) to AVI ... in this case 23.976fps to 25fps ... because my old Plasma screen hiccups unless it is fed proper PAL or NTSC. Maybe time for a new screen ... $$$$

Thanks for your thoughts anyway....

P.S. I was rather miffed to discover I converted 6x20min spools of a feature film before I discovered I had the problem! They all played fine in Vegas.

You do what you have to do to make things work for you and you did so no worries on my end.
