What type of AVI did you save(codec)? Was it DV, Indeo, etc. This will make a difference in the file size.

After running through VirtualDub, did you save the new AVI using the same codec.

VideoFactory will only recompress the parts that need it and will otherwise maintain the compression of the original file. Yes, the original file was probably compressed. You wouldn’t be able to capture if it was uncompressed. VideoFactory will not introduce any compression that wasn’t there originally.

I think VirtualDub defaults to uncompressed which is why the filesize got so big after you processed it. In VirtualDub, go into the Video menu under Compression and select the same codec as the original file for starters. Use the File->File Information... menu option to see what codec the original file is using. It will be next to the Decompression label.
