.avi - "error occurred while opening a codec"

Just like the title of this post says, that's what the pop-up reads... the pop-up I recieved while trying to open an .avi file.
I need to edit an .avi file.
I thought Vegas Video 6 could do anything.
Is there a particular, separate "plug-in" I have to download or something to get this to work?

AVI is just a wrapper for many different kinds of files. Download "GSpot" and see what codec is used by this file. Then download and install that codec so that Vegas can read it.

OK jetdv,
I've downloaded K-lite which has that Gspot.
Now, how do I apply it to my Vegas Video?

Odds are pretty good that the files are created using an MJPEG codec.
For more help with this, check out the How do I open AVI files create by still cameras? section on jetdv's site.
