AVI File troubles

Folks, this isn't making any sense . . . I have recently
posted SOS messages on how to go about rendering AVI files
for output to my DV Camcorder.

Everytime I think I have the problem solved, things go
whacky, and I'm back in the soup.

Earlier today, I was able to play back from VegasCapture
avi's which would previously not run smoothly. Today, they
ran smooth as silk. I was also able to render to avi via
the NTSC-DV template, and it didn't seem to matter whether
I used compression or not, but, when I did, I used the NTSC-
DV codec.

Completed a very nice four-minute video with titles,
umpteen fades and other transitions I was testing.
Everything worked fine. I was even able to open the avi's
with Pinnacle's Studio DV (I'm thinking about doing this to
assemble avi files that exceed the FAT 32 limit.

I was even able to record direct from the timeline, smooth
transitions and all. Well that was my first file.

On my second (and all subsequent files), nothing seems to
work. Seems that playback is all jerky no matter how I
tinker with my settings.

I'm confused.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I'm running a 900 mhz machine, 128k memory, SBI live video,
plenty of HD space, switching from WinME to Win2000 in my
experiements.

Thanks again.

Well, I'm back to smooth avi renders (still am not sure why
I had problems). Now,it seems, the render to avi of my
test project (which I'd like to complete and show someday),
is stopping at the same point each time I try to render it.

The time is around 9.5 minutes, file size around 2.41GB,
there is plenty of file space on the destination drive, I
have selected the entire region of my project as a loop
area, so, what could be causing this current problem?

Thanks again to anyone who can help.

Depending on your OS there are file size limits. Win95,98,
and ME all have a file size limit of around 2 GB. I am not
familiar with all the technical details related to this
since I have not yet rendered a project that large. Do a
search on this forum as I'm sure there are plenty of posts
related to the file size limits.

I am not sure what type of computer system you
have, but I had the same thing happen to me when
I tried to render a 3.5GB video file for the first
time on my system using Vegas Video 2.0 ( PIII 700/256MB
45GB 7200/ATA100 data drive ). After much consternation
as a last resort I reset the clock speed on my CPU
(I was overclocking @933MHZ) back to its default of
700MHZ. Bingo, the render went thru without a hitch.
Moral of the story, it is not good to overclock your
machine when rendering gigabytes of video.

Thanks for the replies. My system is a 900 Mhz machine
running WinME/Win2000. I was having major headaches on the
Win2000 side, so I completed the editing of this project
using WinME. I have 128 mb or RAM, and plenty of HD space.

File size limits in WinME for avi's is 4gb, and I have
confirmed that with several of my captures.

This project with which I'm having a problem renders from
start to finish, should be around 15 to 16 minutes long,
should be under the 4gb limit.

What puzzles me is that, although I can sit there and watch
it render from start to finish, the finished avi file
includes only about half of the project. If I check the
file properties for that file, it is only 2.41 GB, so,
somehow, VV render is truncating the process.

Any further suggestions appreciated.

If you " render to new track" a 2-second avi file (using
the NTSC template), then check the media properties of that
new event (right click on the event/ media tab/ format:
should say "DV".

If it says anything else except "DV", you have an
unsupported 3rd party codec installed, and this may be the
root of the problem.

OK, perhaps we're onto part of the problem. When I render
to new track, right click on the even, click media, the
format shows "uncompressed" even though I double checked
under the advanced tab for the compresseion method and made
certain the NTSC DV was clicked. Seems there should be
some sort of compression showing, even if it was described
as "unknown".

All the files I had rendered prior to today used to
show "mirodv2" if I right clicked --> properties -->
summary. Based upon your comments (and others concerning
the problems Studio DV might cause (I've been attempting to
use the two programs on the same computer, not
simultaneously, of course, just would like to be able to
import to SDV avi's created in VV2.0) I uninstalled the
Studio program, ran a routine downloaded from their bbs
("regdelete") to wipe out it's drivers.

Now, all my previously rendered avi's show "unknown" in
place of the miro2dv (or mirodv2, I forget).

I don't notice much difference in the way those files
handle.

I uninstalled VV2.0 and VideoCapture, reinstalled from the
latest update file downloads without first installing from
the vv2.0 cd (was this a mistake?).

Seems that I can render my test project comlete, but the
resultant avi still shows "unknown" under format in the
explorer-->properties-->summary tab.

Video is not so bad as to say it's jerky (sound is steady,
no start/stop of action), but it is definitely jittery
compared to the original.

Hate to be so pesky, but, obviously I still don't have
things quite right.

What need I do in order to insure that I'm dealing only
with the supported codec?

Thanks again for your help.

Oh, and one more thing. I produced a test avi capture
using VideoCapture. When I right click --> play the clip
that appears in the VC clip list, it definitely is
start/stop/audio interupted jerky.

Where do I look to straighten that problem out.

Thanks
