Most video files are AVI files. DV, Indeo, MJPEG are all AVI files and Vegas Video does support them. What problem are you having?

I was trying to convert an AVI file to MPEG, but Vegas Video couldn't recognize that AVI file.

The AVI file you are using is most likely compressed. You need to find out what encoder was used, As Dave mentioned, and make sure you have the codec installed on your Vegas system. AVI is actually the best source file you can use, uncompressed and SF DV being the most compatible.

It may be a Divx file which sometimes (or maybe always) has an AVI extension. Right click on the properties of the file and see if it lists a codec under DETAILS.
