AVI MPEG Render Question

Since I'm running out of space on my hard drive after transferring a lot of videos, I want to render the AVIs to MPEG2 and delete the original files. I'm curious however...if I then open the MPEG file, add transitions etc. and then re-render, do I lose image quality?

I wonder if the same would apply to AVI after adding transitions and re-rendering to AVI. Do I lose anything there?

Appreciate any help out ther! THanks

You will loose more quality by re-rendering an MPEG2 than re-rendering an AVI file because MPEG2 files use more compression. (and thus more chances for compression artifacts to degrade the quality of the video).

If you have a digital video camera you ought to consider just writing the AVI out to the camera to store on tape(s). That would be a better way to clear hard drive space while keeping a your high quality original AVI.
