I have the same problem but I haven't found a solution.

The video track is not muted. The file is an Anime episode. Here are its properties:

Video: 320x240x24, 23.971 fps, 42691.852, Alpha=None, Field Order=None (progressive scan), DivX 5.0.2 Codec
Audio: 56kBit/s, 24000Hz, Stereo, 42691.851, MPEG Layer-3

As I said, the audio works great, but the video doesn't work. It's just a black screen in the Preview Window.

The answer to your problem is: DivX 5.0.2 Codec

I assume that you can see the video frames in the timeline but you cannot see any video in preview. If so, check to see if your video channel has an opacity envelope set to 0%.

If the parent/child function on your video track is engaged, disengage it and mute all video channels located above the channel that contains your .avi.

I have the DivX 5.0.2 Codec. And no, I cannot see the frames in the timeline. Those are black too. What is a parent/child function anyway? (I'm a newbie.)

Do a search for DivX on this forum. You will find out that DivX does not work well. DivX is your problem - whether or not you have the codec installed.

There is a file called aviplug.dll in the File Format Folder (C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats), but it says it is for Windows 2 File Format. Is there a Windows 1? Could Vegas only support Windows 2 AVI, not Windows 1, and the AVI I am using is a Windows 1?

Does Sonic Foundry have a plug-in that can help me?

Download DivX 5.03. That should solve all your problems, it did for me.
