AVI to AVI?

I am in the process of uploading a hord of mini DV tapes to PC. I do not have the time to sit there when the video ends after 30 minutes on a 65 tape. So I end up with 35 minutes worthless data taking hard drive space after the video completes. Can I resave the original AVI file as another AVI file with the last 35 minutes edited off, or will that process diminish video quality?
Thanks for any insight :)

As long as you save the files in the same format as the source, there will be no loss. In that case, Vegas will simply copy the video and audio data to the new file untouched.

An alternative...

I'm not sure what capture program you're using, but many (most) can be set up to detect the loss of video, then stopping the capture process. Also, Check out Scenalyzer. More than worth the small investment! Use the timer function to capture only a preset number of minutes, plus a bunch of other cool functions!

I use the Vegas capture untility and have found that it does not capture black if the video ends before the tape runs out. This appears to be the default. So you will only have the 30 minutes of video in the AVI.

Just a note. I never rewind my tapes after recording. I then look at the timecode when I run VidCap before rewinding. This tells me how long the capture is. Of course this only works if there are no breaks in the timecode.
