AVI Types?

Hi all

I have two AVI files. When I drag one of them from the explorer into Vegas, both the audio and video tracks populate fine with the audio and video from the file. Howver, when I attempt to drag the other into Vegas, only the audio track is populated: the video track is not populated with Video.
I know both AVI files have video since I can play both in Windows Media Player just fine.

Is there setting I need to set in Vegas that will allow me to edit/see both the video and audio on the second AVI file?

I'm using Vegas 5.

Thanks

-Mike

Mike,

The search feature on this forum will bring up lots of good answers. The answer to this is that avi is just a wrapper that a codec is placed in- much like candy inside its wrapper- avi is just the wrapper. You need to have the proper codec installed for Vegas to see it. I know, you can see it in Windwos Media Player... but that is not Vegas. If you do a search on here you will find a link to a useful little tool that will allow you drag your avi file over top of it and it will tell you exactly what codec was used to encode it. From here you can search for the codec via google and install it to edit the footage. I do not remember the name of the application, but if you did a search just on google for "Codec viewer" or the like, you should get a lot of options- there are free ones.

FORUM ADMIN: Will you make this a sticky? Or better yet, why not make a sticky of commonly asked- easily answered posts- that would be most beneficial.

For that matter, a lot of times, even Windows Media Player will show what the codec it is in the properties of the playing file.

Not all the time, though.

Thanks for you responses.

The codecs I've tried include:
DivX 6
Xvid

Both these codecs come as executables and I've installed both. However, Vegas still does not seem to see the video portion, only the audio.
Is there some trick in having Vegas see/use these codecs so that I can edit these videos?

Thanks

Mike,

You need to find out what codec the avi file was encoded with. Once you know that, then you should be able to open it in Vegas. Is it a divx file?

Did you search for what I listed above? I believe it is called "g spot".

Thanks Again folks for you help.

I did try the GSpot app and the result says that my file is...

Codec: DX50/div
Name: DivX 6.4.0
Status: Codec(s) are Installed
DivX Style: packed frame" AVI
Open DML (AVI V2.0)
Interleave: 1 vid frame (42 ms), preload=504
There is a little green button to the right that indicates: MPG4

Do you need more info?
I wish there was a way to attach a JPG and you could see the exact output from GSpot V2.60.

Anyway...
Any clues?
Thanks so much again. :-)

sounds like this falls in line with another divx/xvid post in this forum.

Download FFDSHOW (latest beta will do).
You should then be able to bring in the problem vid in vegas.
You can associate ffdshow with divx/xvid only if you want (see during setup).

I had a similar problem in converting Mp4 files from my Casio Z750 still camera.
I found this converter program worked: http://mp4cam2avi.sourceforge.net/ with Vegas 6.0d -- still working with Vegas 7.0d.

Jadeeee

Would you know how FFDSHOW is supposed to work?
When I install I only see a config option, no app.
What is the process I need to go through that allows FFDSHOW to "Do Its Thing". :-)

Thanks
