aviplug.dll render errors

Just a quick note so this info is "out there" I have been getting numerous exception errors as I upgraded to a P4 with XP on it. Errors were occurring at during editing/watching on the preview window and while rendering to .avi. All details pointed to the aviplug.dll. After much time spent with XP tweaks, I found that in my case, it was my RAM.

My system came with 256 DDR and I recently added a PNY 256DDR. While I didn't check the RAM with a utility, I pulled the PNY chip and all errors ceased. I have performed 4 render tests and edited on the machine for 60 minutes with no errors.

Thanks to all for their direct and in-direct help on this forum. Best I've ever used.

I bought a bad stick of ram once. Didn't think it would ever happen to ME!
Are you going to try a ram testing utility, or just return it?
Samsung is doing well in the RAM business.....Crucial is OK too, but that's who sold me the bad stick. Corsaire! Good stuff.
You can always try the suspect ram in a different slot, then run the diagnostic, and maybe see if you still get the aviplug.dll errors.
Check those DRAM settings/timings in the bios.

Thanks for the info.

it's always best practice to use identical RAM sticks. if you are building a system and think you'll ever need more RAM, just get it all at once. I've had *numerous* problems mixing RAM brands even though they should have worked together.

Good point cheesehole!
I don't know if it's still true, but another General practice mentioned was NOT to fill ALL your DIMM slots........I don't know about that one though. I know plenty who are not having any prob's with using all 3(of 3) slots. Guess it depends on the brand of mobo.
I had 3 sticks of Crucial installed and one stick went BAD gradually. Boy was that confusing.......until it finally went TOTAL, and wouldn't POST. Then the mobo beeps gave it away as RAM, but it still took longer to find which one of three was suspect. Having only 2(on a 3 DIMM slot mobo)will make it easier to trblshoot. I'm down to 512MB, and I'm just happy with that.
