Batch Create Subclip from all events on Timeline (using eventnames)

TobHammm wrote on 2/10/2021, 10:27 PM

Hello there,

If I right-click on an Event, I have the option of creating a subclip for further use.
Any script available out there of doing this automatically for all events in a timeline?
Ideally with naming the newly created subclip identical to the event name (active take name)

This would be a huge organisational benefit for large documentary projects as I am working on.

Best

Tob

As far as I know, no script is needed to do this. Just select all events, right-click and choose the option to create subclip. The created subclips will have the active take name of the original selected events +  the term subclip + numeric sequence determined by the number of events present in the same media.

Thanks @joelsonforte.br, however...

It doesnt really work with custom names, here is what I mean:

I have already hunderts of named events like that that I wanted to convert into subclips with the same name. But seems It doesnt really take the name. I wish it did. Or maybe there is a setting to change that deep in the preferences?

@joelsonforte.br try giving the events a unique name (that is different from the video clip filename), and you'll see what I mean.

If you create the regions on the timeline (instead of the trimmer), you can use the "Extract Good Clips" tool in Excalibur to pull each region into a subclip, name the subclip the name of the region, and all subclips will be moved to a new track. So here we see two regions on the track with the "Extract Good Clips" tool selected so you can see the various options that are available:

Then you run Extract good clips. I named the first region "region 1" and the second one "region 2". This is the new result:

Now you can drag the subclips from the Project Media wherever you want. If you just want to get the audio back on the clips already on the timeline, just select those new events and use the "Restore Missing AV" tool in Excalibur.

@jetdv 2 questions :

1:When "extracting good clips" from regions and creating subclips, does this also work if the region spans over 2 or more clip files?

2: Will the subclips be references or will they take the same disk space as a clip of the same length would?

@joelsonforte.br  I recently bought otterscrips as well... Looks like I have to buy Excalibur as well to solve my problem..oof,have to check my budget... And then: events to regions, regions to subclips! Note to script developers : A direct way is still a niche to be filled, it seems 😄

@TobHammm I agree and understand you.

No. A subclip, by definition, cannot span multiple events. A subclip must reference a single file.

2: Will the subclips be references or will they take the same disk space as a clip of the same length would?

Yes, they are true subclips in Vegas. They are simply pointers to the original file.

@TobHammm I see you also own Vegasaur. You can use the Bookmarks feature to create the names of regions in batch automatically with the name of the active take.

Yes, Excalibur will do that as well. But it will do so for every event - not just selected events. That's something that could certainly be added to Excalibur.
