I'm not seeing what you're looking at that would suggest that only AVC or VC1 are 1440 x 1080.
It cites the three formats, then cites the various resolutions and framerates, but I don't see resolution/framerate tied to a format.
I'd be surprised if it can't play 1440 x 1080 MPEG 2, simply because that is part of the BD spec.

It's the table of supported formats on page 9 of the brochure. Next to 1440x1080 is a *, the * note is "AVC/VC-1 only".

If 1440x1080 MPEG2 is part of the BD spec, then this is good news.. and it suggests that this Panasonic player is out of line (or the documentation is incorrect)?

Panasonic is a strong believer and partner in bluray. In fact, Panasonic has demonstrated its alliance with Sony when they both agreed to develop some new future camera formats, one has aready been introduce a couple of months ago. So, I believe that any Panasonic player will perform well and will have firmware updateable features.
