Beat matching grid accuracy

chris-h wrote on 7/30/2019, 4:48 AM

I have a song at 120 bpm. I have set my properties to 120 bpm and my ruler is set to Measures and Beats.
I placed my audio on the first beat of the grid and tapped in markers on the beats and manually moved the ones where I was slightly out with timing.
So, I should have all my markers (which are exactly on the beats of the music) exactly aligned with the grid, but this is not the case. The grid is way off (see image)
Does anyone have any ideas why?
Thanks in advance.

Apparently this song is not exactly 120 bpm.

Use Bpm analyzer to find out the exact Bpm of your song and set the ruler accordingly, no need to set also markers. You can use the grid to edit to the beat.

Is/was Quantatize to frames on when you set your markers.

Thanks for the responses. I checked the bpm with an online bpm checker (lesson learned!) I put it in BPM Analyzer as suggested and yes, you're right, it was actually 128 bpm!
I changed it to 128pbm in Properties and everything is now as it should be.
Please accept my apologies, I should have been more diligent with the tempo in the first place.
I only set the markers as a double check, and yes, the quantize was set correctly.
This is an occasion where Vegas is performing properly and the user just assumed it must be the program which was at fault!
Again, sorry, but thanks all for getting me back on track.

I really appreciated reading your comment!!

I have a theory about that that I've written on this forum before. Most everyone blames the software first because that's what the focus of their attention is on. It's perfectly normal!! It is like when you see someone trip on a sidewalk, you think they need to watch where they are going (that's because your focus is on that person). But if you were to walk on that same sidewalk and trip, you'd blame the sidewalk (because that's where your focus is on the sidewalk.) I have issues with some people on this forum who slam Vegas when maybe half the time or more, it is something else. I'm not saying Vegas is perfect. I'm just saying there's so many things it could be other than Vegas.

Just another option. Vegasaur has a Beat Detector which will place markers at each beat for you.

It can also work like a BPM Analyzer - detect BPM and update project settings

Thanks for the info. I just checked it out and, though I don't think I really need Vegasaur (yet!) I'm purchasing the "Film Looks Bundle" which looks great (especially at 39,00!)
So, every cloud...
Thanks again all
