behringer bcf2000

I've read the posts here, butnow I feel dumber than dumb. The Manuals and piecemeal software on the Behringer site are pretty woeful, I think. That aside, the damn thing won't work. I have all the latest drivers and software, Vegas 6d. The Behringer installer installs files, then goes on to say I should follow instructions from the Device Manager, and after installing "press finish to start Control Panel".
Well, no device manager comes up and I can press the Finish button until the cows come home and nothing happens... no Device Manager, no Control Panel.
When setting up in Vegas, once I saw BCF2000 options in the MIDI selections, but not now. In Mackie mode the faders zot down to zero and stay there. No pressing of buttons will bring it to life. And vegas simply ignores it.
Am I going nuts? Help!!!

You fire up the BCF in Mackie Emulation mode, and select Mackie Control (or whatever it is) in the Vegas menu.

I did just that... but nothing. Vegas is set to external control, unit registers as usb audio device and then selected in midi options, and mackie in external audio driver. Zilch. Pushed the silly buttons (encoder group bottom left and edit) and still nothing. Loaded the thing on another computer... and still the same. Its me or the Behringer.... or...
I am missing something here. At first I thought it might have been the fact the first machine was XP with SP1 but the second is SP2, so bang went that theory, although the install went a little further according to the Behringer instructions; however it failed to close properly and did not bring up Control Panel as promised. Weird.

Is the BCF talking to the computer ? You sure you've got the necessary BCF drivers loaded, and done any appropriate firmware updates ? I do recall that the lastest driver requires an firmware update to have been done (read the Beh FAWs).

Does BCFView show anything ?

XP SP1 , 2, or 0 shouldn't make any difference.

You say your unit registers as "USB audio device"
This means you did not install the Behringer MIDI driver for the BCF. Not sure it will solve the problem but it might help.
