I don't know about DX4 from M-Audio but I do know something very good has been said about a line of their monitors here on the forum. Was it LX4 or DX4? I don't exactly remember...

Buster, spend another 50.00 and get the LX4 system from M-Audio. I don't know what B&H price on those is, go in there and tell Kendall you're a VASST guy, he'll take good care of you. But you can find the LX4 systems on the web for around $200.00. You won't regret it.

Buster, Santa was VERY good to me this Christmas and I got a pair of LX4’s with the 5.1 Expanders and they sound incredible. Like Spot said, you won’t regret the extra money you spend on the LX4’s. What’s great is that you can start with the LX4 2.1 and then add the 5.1 expansion speakers later giving you 5 matched speakers. If you buy the DX4’s and want to go surround later, there are no matching expansion speakers or any place to plug them in. The LX4 2.1 already has the outputs in the subwoofer for 5.1 so you pay a little more initially but the expansion is easy later.

B and H's price is $280. Santa wasn't that good. (In fairness, neither was I.) I actually have less than $150, to spend but that seems to be the next price plateau. I need to get some other stuff, so I need to stick to my budget for now.

I just searched for prices using Froogle and most places have them for $280, they cheapest I found them was $250.

How are the M-audio DX4s?

Zzounds has them for $150 with free shipping if I read this correctly.

Yes the DX4's go for $150.

The 2.1 LX4's go for $280.

I would imagine that you can’t go wrong with the DX4’s if that’s your price limit. I have never heard them but based on the LX4’s that I have and the fact that the DX4 is the same 4" LF drivers and 1" HF drivers they have got to be great (sans subwoofer). They are ported in the back which means they probably and sound best when placed close to a wall rather than out in the middle of a room.

If you wanted another stereo-only (not surround) model for comparison purposes check out the Edirol MA-D20's. They sounded good to me in the shop and they have a digital input too, unlike the M-Audio's. Having said this I myself will probably go for the M-Audio LX4 shortly.

I have had positive experiences with the folowing merchants who also happen to carry the LX-4:
Zzounds
Sweetwater

B&H is currently out of stock.

Am I reading this right? It appears that Zzounds has the same price for either 2.1 or 5.1 system - $280 ??

YES! Surely a misprint, but try and see if it sticks. I got what I believe to be the best deal around for the 5.1: Cost me $405 a year ago. So this is a steal.
