Best Capture Resolution for best output quality

I'm kinda new to this whole non linear video editing thing but am an acid pro. I've got a project that has to be broadcast ready ASAP and I need some advice on the best way to source my footage in so that my out put is as clean as possible.

So, my question is what's the best resolution to capture in. Also, I have and ATI all in wonder pro 128 and I would like to know the best way to source it back out to tape.

Thanks

get a Canopus ADVC-100 a/d converter, transfer the footage in as DV, do your edits, render as DV, transfer back out with the Canopus. Works great, broadcast ready.

Whatever the source and output formats, we can probably all agree that using the ATI AIW is NOT the way to go.

If the ATI AIW is being used to capture, the source has to be analog. SonicEPM is correct, but if you can't fork over the $300 bucks yet for the Canopus then you will need to capture uncompressed AVI at 720x480 (Assuming you are in NTSC land). I have had bad experience with the ATI AIW with audio quality and A/V sync. The Canopus solved all my problems.

FYI - The uncompressed AVI files you capture will be very large (about 1GB/min), so you may have to do a little at a time, take into Vegas, render out to NTSC DV AVI format, delete the original source, capture some more, and so on. This will reduce the file sizes by a factor of 5 and the quality will still be there. You may also need to ungroup the audio from the video stream and stretch the audio out a bit while maintaining pitch, otherwise the voices or sounds will be ahead of the video after a while. This depends on how long your clip is. I had to capture audio directly to the sound card from the video camera in order to avoid the snap, crackles and pops I got through the AIW, but I think I still needed to stretch the audio.

Thanks!

I've been capturing at that resolution and thought I was crazy because the file sizes were sooooooo friggin huge.

You're right, I don't have the $300 to fork over right now (maybe after this project :-). But the method you describe seems to be my best option for the tool's I'm currently using. I'll give it a whirl.
