If you're using Media Player 9 you can install Tweak MP and then run it from the Tools/Plug-ins menu. In Tweak MP's Full Screen options you can set MP to show the controls only when the cursor is at the top or bottom of the screen instead of anytime the mouse moves. You can also speed up the hiding of the controls and mouse pointer.

They also have some DVD plugins there but I haven't used them so I don't know if they'd help you.

I had Power DVD and did not like it at all- it had problems playing back various dvd's. I opted for WinDVD4 and have never had a problem- it works perfectly every time. I use it on my laptop to give presentations to prospective clients- several times I have connected to their systems and presented my material on large screens and it looks great!!
