Best fix to improve muffled sounding audio?

MikeLV wrote on 5/16/2017, 2:05 PM

I have some recording on the timeline and the instrument sounds muffled, not bright and clear. Any suggestions to improve the sound? I see like 3 or 4 different kinds of EQ plugins so not sure which is the right one to use, and if EQ is the right plugin to use at all or if there is something else that can help... Thanks in advance!

All you have to do is trust your ears and try some EQ settings; there is no right and wrong here, no rules, just better or worse, so be brave and just jump in and "turn some knobs" and hear what happens - a hint - a muffled sound can be helped by both boosting the mid and high frequencies as well as reducing the lower-mid and low frequencies.

For a start, play around with the Sony "Graphic EQ" ....in the 'Envelope' mode you can just drag the curve around to your heart's content.... the results may surprise you :-)

Aside from the EQ, a HF exciter can add some 'sparkle' to dull sounding tracks. The iZotope multiband exciter is bungled w/ SF Pro. Otherwise, there are free and for purchase exciters available. Warning: A little bit goes a long way and often misused.. more is not better.

Did anyone get the Master Exciter to show up in any version of Vegas? It shows up for me in SF11 but I can't even see it in 32-bit VP10.

Hi Nick, The iZotope mastering suite is there and works normally in VP-9 (32-bit), but the mastering suite version I use is the second generation DX version which included the multi-band exciter. As I recall, the first generation mastering suite worked as well in VP-9 but didn't have the exciter plug.
