Best mpeg settings in Main concept

I have a few projects to finish & video quality is important. I noticed the presets in NTSC DVD are low. Are these optimized for best quality if the DVD was to be around 2 hours long? My projects are around 1 hr & 20 minutes only. Should I just use those settings or kick up the average bit rate a little? My other question is in comparing this encoder to the ligos plug in with premiere, Main concept seems to look a little better & the colors seem to be a little more vivid but the settings to render a dvd compliant mpeg are lower in MC. How could Main concept look better at a much lower bit rate setting than Ligos does at a higher bit rate setting? The average in Ligos is 5632 & minimum is preset to 2240 which is higher than Main concept.

1) Sure, there's nothing wrong with kicking the bitrate up as long as you don't go over the limit for DVD. The goal in MPEG encoding is usually to achieve the optimal blend of quality, speed and disc space. Different people will certainly want different combinations of these.

2) Thanks for the comments on the quality of the MainConcept encoder! Quality is not entirely dependent on bitrate. It depends largely on the motion search methods used to calculate frames. So it is possible for one encoder to have better quality even at a lower bitrate. Thanks for noticing!

You can't help but notice the difference!! All I did since this project was only 1 hour & 20 minutes was kick the average up to 6000, the minumum up to 4000. It all still fit but for larger projects the preset looks as good as the settings I kicked it up to. Is this encoder a single pass or 2x? I can't find the info on this. Thanks for your help & good job!
