Best Quality .AVI Codecs w/Transparency?

I am creating subtle stars and mist effects and at one point will have to "extract" these from the work copy by chroma/alpha channel process so I can then overlay them over other footage. Porject format: NTSC, 29.97 fps

I know that Indeo is one codec that has transparency, but I have also read it's not the best way to go (gets "blocky") -- and each NLE app has its own ways of rendering. So it can get a bit confusing to read up on this on the Net,.

It would be most useful if someone could offer a list of best-to-worst (and/or pros-cons) of the various codecs that offer alpha/transparency that would work within Vegas.

Thanks.

Not automatically though. Under Custom / Video you must check the "Render Alpha Channel" box.
