Best render file format for long single-file videos

Tonder wrote on 4/22/2019, 9:18 AM

TL;DR: How to best render 1-3 hours of video into one single file, in good/high quality while still being able to play smoothly.

For several years, I have been recording videos whenever I've been traveling. Though my editing skills are constantly improving, I still haven't been able to crack one particular nut: How to best save the final rendering.

I want to render my final videos, ranging from 1 to 3 hours in total length, in as few files as possible, while retaining good quality and being able to play them in their entirety without having lacking images or sound after 5-10 minutes of playback (which is what I am always ending up with).

My thought is (maybe naive), that if e.g. Handbreak can convert a Blueray disk into one single file, which is playable (in good quality) on my iPad, shouldn't I be able to produce the same result with movies I have created myself?

Any tips or insights would be highly appreciated!

@Tonder can you explain more about what "lacking" means? Are you saying that your rendered files played back on your iPad after 10 minutes are lacking? What is lacking?

Perhaps the word should have been 'lagging'. Just a guess.

Thanks for the replies!

Sorry, I meant lagging, yes. It usually starts after 10 minutes of playback, as if the file is too big a mouthfull for the iPad, TV or other devices I've tried (xbox, PS4 etc.). I am sure it's just me not using the best format for my purpose.

Which format would you use, if you were to keep e.g. 1 or 2 hours of video in your NAS/storage, as an alternative to burning it to a DVD or Blu-ray?

What files do you render now that you have problems with?

If those devices can play Mp4 files what are the properties of the used files for that playback option?

@Tonder your issue doesn't seem to be an issues that other users have. I'm not familiar with an iPad, but if you are having those same issues playing your render in something like VLC on your PC, it may be best for you to share additional information, so we may be able to help.

You can use the free app Mediainfo (in Text view mode) to post a screenshot of your source media specs. A screenshot of your Project Property setting, and a screenshot of your Render As format template. From those we may be able to detect what your problem is.

Does your source audio have different sample rates?
