Best Safe Settings for MPG2 Rendering for DVD

What are the setting to get the highest possible quality on MPG2 rendering for DVD that will not risk problems with some players? I seem to remember there was a max bit rate that some players would balk at. If DVD space isn't a problem, it is possible to just run 8M constant bit rate without risk? Or is it safe to go over 8M?

Thanks.

8M CBR will work fine. I wouldn't exceed it though. If disc space is a priority then a VBR with an 8000 max and a minimum equal to 60% of the average should give very good results.

Thanks, John.

But if I've got more than enough disc space, no matter what the settings, is this going to give the absolute best quality (safely)?

Once you get to 8,000,000 bps, you are going to have to look very hard to see encoding artifacts (although they will still be there).
