Displaycal is third-party drivers?

Displaycal is actually the GUI. http://displaycal.net/ Once you download and install displaycal, you will will be prompted to download Argyll CMS (color management system), the actual calibration software that includes a driver that will work with Spyder 2. Once you've done this, you will get a message that you must install the firmware for Spyder 2. If you have the original Spyder 2 installation CD, place it in the CD drive. Then in the Argyll_V1.8.3/bin folder, there is an executable "oeminst.exe". Simply run that and the firmware file will be installed in the proper place and you are ready to calibrate. If you don't have the original CD, I can upload the correct file and location of where it should be placed. A bit complicated? Yes, but seems well worth the effort and the price is right since you already have the colorimeter.

wwaag, no need to insert the original spyder cd to use dispalycal and a spyder sensor !
Argyll cms and spyder drivers are 2 different things.
Under Linux, no need to download argyll as displaycal installation automatically installs argylcms

Simply connect your spyder sensor and displaycal will also automatically download the sensor firmware !
You can also use the menu tools -> import colorimeter something (I'm using the french version ...) if you want to switch to another sensor

This is much easier than before ! displaycal is really easy nowadays, but you still need to know what you are doing.
Here is a good starting point :

I'm not using Linux. Most Vegas users are on Win 7 or Win10. I installed displaycal on a Win7 machine. It did NOT automatically install argosyCMS automatically. It had to be installed manually--just a single click.

Simply connect your spyder sensor and displaycal will also automatically download the sensor firmware !

Again, not for Spyder 2 colorimeter. Message indicated you MUST install firmware.

Here is a good starting point :
Agreed. A very nice tutorial. A very good starting point for most of us who don't know what we're doing.

Ok waaag, I tried displaycal under Windows with a spyder 2 : you are right you must install firmware.

This step is automatic upon first launch under Linux.
Displaycal is easier under Linux for those 2 steps (Argyll and spyder firmware) but the same for all other functions.

Most of the time, I use Blender for my videos as my main NLE, I now only use Vegas pro 13 from time to time. And up to now, for me, Linux is faster than Windows. This is why I only use Windows ... for Vegas pro !

I got my Spyder Pro today and it was easy to use and setup.

After calibrating, I noticed that my most recent videos on Vimeo look great! Many other videos on YouTube also look great!

If I use Windows Media Player to view the original videos from my cameras, they look poor. Lack blue levels. Sort of the way an old color CRT would look when the blue gun goes way down. They look poor in the same way with Vegas. So the calibration seems to work in some ways but not other ways. The videos look better with VLC Media Player but not as good when viewed on Vimeo.

I am using Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge to view the videos on Vimeo. I do not have Google Chrome installed on my new build yet.

On my main monitor, I could not adjust the brightness anywhere near what it wanted but the colors are much better on that monitor. It is my main preview monitor is where the problems are.
Figures...

So now I need to figure this thing out.

Update:

The old Windows Media player does not show my videos properly. I think there is a setting to change that but I cannot remember where it is, if it is. The newer player that comes with Windows 10 does show my videos correctly. I cannot remember the name of it while typing this. LOL! I am doing good to remember the name of anything.

I re-calibrated my main monitor for viewing the videos without using the part that measures the room lighting and got much better results. I also set the target Kelvin higher. When used with the room lighting part, it wants to use a Kelvin that is too low. As in too warm.

So I can now say that I pretty much got the results I want. Not perfect but close enough to really look great.

There are other comments about how videos will look on other systems. There is no doubt that other systems will probably make a mess of my videos but if someone complains to me about my videos, I can definitely tell them that my monitor is properly calibrated and my videos look like they are supposed to.

If I were doing this professionally, it would be a MUST that my monitor be correctly calibrated. So if a client were to complain and try to get a refund or a discount then I can prove that the video was done properly.

It is my responsibility to edit my videos properly even though those who view it might see it totally wrong because their monitor is not properly calibrated.

What do you guys think of the X-rite Color Munki? I was thinking of purchasing this instead of a Spyder. There's several kinds of Spyder devices, and the Color Munki looks cheaper and easier to use, yet just as sophisticated.

wwag,
I got it working with the 2.3.5 software; no luck whatsoever with the Argylle driver installation.
Question: why is the lcd baffle/filter important, and where do I get one?

[i]why is the lcd baffle/filter important, and where do I get one?[i]

I have no idea that is. All I have is the Spyder unit that simply hangs on the LCD that i usually hold in place using packing tape on the top of the monitor. BTW, I'm in Seattle for medical reasons using an old laptop and have no idea when I'll get back to my editing machine, so can't help now with Argyll setup.

@musicvid10

Finally back to my editing computer. Scanned photo from original box to show exactly what the lcd baffle/filter is. If it is removed, the suction cups are exposed which are used for CRT monitors. The baffle is replaced for use on LCD monitors. It's been so long since I've had a CRT monitor that I had forgotten. If you've misplaced the baffle, you might find one on Ebay, although it would probably be the same just to get another colorimeter.

If you're still having problems installing the Argyl software let me know. One question--do you still have the original software dvd? If so, installing the firmware driver is a lot easier. You can PM me if you want.
