Best settings for dynamic RAM preview and number of rendering threads?

studio-4 wrote on 6/22/2021, 7:28 PM

[I just moved this to the Vegas Pro forum since I'll be upgrading soon.]

For most use-cases, what settings does everyone recommend for these preferences options? Note that I'm mostly editing 1080p24 content (i.e., no 4K) and don't acquire in any RAW or S-Log formats. I'm also doing some high-speed photography at 1080p240, but not very often. I'm running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit on a quad-core Xeon PC.

Current preferences settings:
Preferences → Video:
Dynamic RAM preview max (MB): 200 Max available: 31,651.
Maximum number of rendering threads: 32.

System summary (full specs in sig):
Intel Xeon E5-1650 v3 3.5GHz (4GHz-boost) quad-core CPU.
32GB ECC RAM.
1TB SATA SSD.
AMD Radeon RX470 4GB.

Acquisition-formats:
Sony FS100/FS700: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 AVCHD Ver.2.0.
Sony DSR450/VX2000: DVCAM25.
Acquisition frame-rates: 1080p24; 1080p240; 480p24 w/2:3 pull-down; 480i60.

Effects plug-ins:
BorisFX Continuum Stylize Unit 2020.5.
NewBlue Elements 3 Overlay.
FXhome Intensity VFX Pack.

Although I'm currently using VMS 17 Platinum, I plan to upgrade to Vegas Pro 18 Edit very soon (and eventually Pro 19), and I may add Boris' Particle Effects Unit and maybe NewBlue's Transitions at that time also. But that's likely all the third-party effects I'll be using for the time being.

I have no plans to upgrade to Vegas Post Suite, so I don't need to consider any requirements to run Vegas Effects; however, I'm quickly becoming a fan of NewBlue's Titler Pro 7 and may add that to the collection in the next month or so. Thanks for any help on this!

200MB and 32 threads are the defaults. There's also a "default all" button on every page of preferences if you ever want to be sure.

I use the RAM preview a lot so I have my RAM preview value set to 1 GB to 4 GB most of the time (16 GB physical system RAM) and I only sometimes set it down to 0 GB for the final rendering.

My render threads are set to 8 (according to my hardware).

This is truly a YMMV idea. Someone who'd done some experimenting, as I recall, said that for a healthy RAM profile (32GB is that) you can, and maybe should use a third for RAM preview, as it also allows the program some other "abilities" or creates a RAM profile that speeds things up more generally.

Again, this is going to be try it and see idea, and probably varies with other hardware combination profiles.

200 MB for RAM preview is pretty meager, you won't see much, as you'd be finding out. So go ahead, all the way up to 10 GB....see what happens. You may like the result, you may not, but its free and easy to try.

That seems entirely reasonable. I have 32GB of system-RAM, so why not?
