I was just wondering of those who know, if TFG Film & Tape is generaly the best 8mm telecine service out there for the money. Or does anyone know of others to recommend?
Since you asked for any others I came across movestuff.tv while reading the cow boards. This company also sells machines to transfer. I've never used their service but might in the future. You can download a samle mpeg to see the quality of transfer on this page. I thought it looked pretty good. Which ever way you go can you report back on your experiences as I have some home movies that my dad shot that I'd like to get transferred into dv.
I recently used a company in Albuquerque to transfer some very old Regular 8 movie to VHS and I thought it came out better than the original. They have a web site at www.olonaimaging.com.

I purchased the "Workprinter" from Moviestuff to do my own Super8 film transfers. The results are stunning. If quality is all that matters, and you have the money to spend on this machine, I highly recommend it. It does require, however, some additional software beyond Vegas to make everything work. In particular, you need to do pulldown, and you need stop motion capture capabilities. The stop motion can be done with a variety of capture programs (Premiere can also do it). The pulldown is a little more tricky. I used AVISynth, a shareware program that is pretty bare-bones and definitely not for everyone. Also, there were no published specs anywhere on how to do pulldown for 18 fps silent film. I invented my own and would be happy to share the "formula" for how to do it. Just drop me a line.
John! You're the lifeline I was looking for :) I have been tasked by the family (and extended family) to archive all the family video... mostly 8mm and Super8 film.
Came across the "WorkPrinter" on the net and although the price is within reason (given that the "family" will kick in also) I was a little shy of the process. I would love to know how you pulled it off! Do you have a "cook book" or process you could send me? I was starting to get desperate and I have so much footage that I'd hate to send it out. I have Vegas and Premiere but don't have a good grasp on the rest. Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated (by me and the grandparents, aunts, cousins...)
Let me know (btw my email is jsteehl@hotmail.com).
Before I invest can you give me an idea of "slow"? How long would it take to convert say 1 hour of 8mm film? You'd think that they would have whitepaper or steps on the site for the workprinter.
Go here http://www.moviestuff.tv/8mm_telecine.html and read up on the product. There are several flavors now, the one I have does about 3 FPS. With a realtime speed of 16 tp 18 FPS, you can calculate the time.
