Best way to put on DVD

Newbie at DVD playing around. In the past I have Rendered everything down to .AVI(uncompressed) for VHS. No wthat I have a DVD burner I have realized it is different(Haha). Anyways, should I try to let my DVD authoring program(NERO 6) convert the .avi(is this possible and fit), or should I re-render to mpeg2 in VV? What would be the best settings?
I have made a couple DVD's so far and have noticed that some of fades are really "blocky"..any suggestions?

I don't have Nero 6, so I can't say how well it works. But, if you use the NTSC DVD template you should be fine. BUT... edit the custom settings for the template. Goto the Advanced Video tab, and check box "Write Sequence Display Extension." I've noticed my DVD authoring software doesn't re-encode the mpeg-2 when i start the burn process. I get good looking DVD's (for a VHS/Hi8 source anyway).
