Beta testers wanted for a new plugin for Video Auto Color Balancing

Thomas-U wrote on 6/12/2022, 2:33 PM

Hey there!

We have launched an OFX plugin for Vegas that automatically balances/neutralises the color in video footage. It works well on material that has an odd color temperature, is under exposed etc. and we are looking for some beta testers who want to have a play with it!

The plugin is already working on other software platforms, and one of our main users is Sky News UK.

We've been keen to port the plugin to Vegas, but need some users who have some 'challenging' material who want to have a play with it for us!

The plugin is available at: https://colorgradr.com/download/

Some more information on who we are, and why we've made this plugin, is also on the site for those that are interested.

Please be aware its in beta, but we would love feedback & questions at: support@colorgradr.com

Many thanks, looking forward to hearing from some of you that want to have a go!

Thomas, and the team at ColorGradr

Thanks for posting j-v, that's an odd error as we are not having issues our end with that link. Does the homepage work? I'll pass that screengrab to the web developers to see if they know what is going on there, would you mind trying a different browser?

Now, more than an hour later, it is possible to download that intended file.

The link and download are working for me. Windows 11 Home plus Chrome.

Thomas-U wrote on 6/12/2022, 5:13 PM

Thank you Peter. We have made a very basic tutorial video on the site, apologies that it's not in-depth as yet, this will be addressed in the coming fortnight.

Essentially, press Fix, adjust the Hue Strength if you want to pull even further away from the original colour temperature, press Fix again, then try one of our Looks from the flydown. You can turn off the Contrast Fix if you want to just fix color as well.

That's kind of it, the idea is that it's as simple as possible to use - hence why Sky News and their editors use it.

@Thomas-U - Looks like a real time-saver, esp for MainLine Time-Is-Of-The-Essence, Time/News Critical workflows. Could be a great entre for VP into that realm of the NewsBiz! Just the tool for OMBs.

Downloaded and installed the MSI pkg. Does this work with V16 on Windows 7? It doesn't show up in plug-ins folder or anywhere else in the list of V16 files. Looks like a useful tool.

I assume this requires the latest build of 636 VP19, due to this build's updated support of OFX spec?

Hi @kplo & @set - thank you for investigating, I have to confess we have only tested on the version we were able to download from the MAGIX site a few weeks ago, which happens to be V19 build 550, and on the new 636 build.

I have to be honest and say that its unlikely we would spend the time looking to support older versions of the Vegas code I'm afraid.

@Grazie Thank you for your positive comments, yes news and fast turnaround material is definitely a great candidate. We have also found people that shoot 'events' (concerts/staged presentations with odd lighting) and documentary / archive material have also benefited a lot from ColorGradr. There are some very useful skintone and daylight/tungsten 'Look' fixes also available for material shot in challenging lighting conditions after the default 'Fix'. It can also help match two different cameras shot in the same location.

On a personal level, as a colourist, there are some nice 'looks' built in too :)

Thanks for the feedback so far, we really appreciate it.

Update: Now it does show up in my FX chain in V16 and Win 7. Simple and easy to use for fast turnaround run&gun stuff. Nice job.

@kplo fab feedback thanks! :)

Thomas-U wrote on 6/16/2022, 5:39 PM

I'd like to thank the dozen people from this forum that have downloaded our beta so far. Hoping we can get some feedback on how the 'Fix' is working for you and what, if any, challenges you have come up against? Thanks all

Thomas-U wrote on 6/18/2022, 7:59 AM

Just a note that we have redone the tutorial with a bit more information that is Vegas specific!

Hope that helps 🙂

Happy to take questions on here, on via support@colorgradr.com - thank you!

I did a quick test with some older footage (HDV and AVCHD) with this Colorgradr plugin.

Conclusion: I prefer the result I achieve with Vegas free built-in Auto Color balance/levels Fx above the results of this colorgradr plugin. Also applying and rendering with this Colorgradr FX takes much more time than using the Vegas Auto Color Fx.

Thomas-U wrote on 6/19/2022, 3:17 PM

Thanks @3POINT, appreciate the feedback. If you did have any footage, even a single frame, you can send to our address I can compare the results? I appreciate that could be a faff for you, but useful for me to compare!

There are quite a few options in ColorGradr that give different results too, and the result is of course subjective. Some footage will work well in some tools, but less successfully in others. It has been designed to be part of a 'toolkit', especially for those receiving varying quality footage.

I do understand that there can be slowdowns using any OFX plugins, as we are restricted with moving the image data in and out of the main software, unfortunately thats quite hard to resolve as a Third Party, some systems do this better than others, and of course the faster your CPU/GPU the better the processing.

Any material you can send over would be useful for me to look at, and kept confidential to us.

Thanks again for commenting - I hope it doesnt put off other users having a go at the beta 🙂

Thomas

The quick test I did gave too much red. Will try to send you some examples tomorrow. I'm just back from holiday ,drove 1200 km and need some rest.

Thomas-U wrote on 6/19/2022, 4:17 PM

Thanks @3POINT you definitely need some rest thats a long drive! Moving the Hue Fix Strength prior to pressing Fix should help, but I would love to take a look when you have rested. Thanks
