Beware of Windows 7 Hibernation

I used to have Vegas render my projects at night. Under Windows Vista this went well; after rendering was finished the PC went into hibernation.

On two consecutive occasions under Windows 7 hibernation was started while Vegas was still actively rendering. The process could be re-started from where it was by hitting the Start button on the PC but if you plan something to be ready in the morning, it is disappointing to see that it is paused at 17%...

P.S. In Windows 7 you can temporarily switch off hibernation.

so windows 7 can detect if the computer's cpu is being used & not go in to hibernation? I turned off hibernation on my wife's laptop because it would turn on after X minutes of no input, no matter what. XP does the same thing.

Generally one of my first post-Windows-install tasks is to disable hibernation for everything except low battery. I've never had any need or desire for my computers to shut themselves down. There have also been too many cases where it happened when it shouldn't have, like in the middle of rendering or even once in the middle of recording.

It's just not a desirable feature.

I think it is a desirable feature if it is functioning properly. There is no need to have a computer running when it is idle.

I suggested to SCS to include a Shutdown Computer option in the render settings. The PC can then be switched off automatically when rendering is finished. A warning would have to be given when one checks this option and the project has not been saved beforehand.

I agree, it's a waste of resources ($$ & power) when it's not being used. Hence I turn it off/enter sleep mode my self. Infact, I told windows to treat the power button with sleep on/off instead of power: I would render (and other long processes) over night & turn the monitor off when I started render. I was so used to turning the monitor & computer on when I would go back to it I always ended up shutting it down & loosing all my work.
