BIG Problem when upgrading from Demo to VV3.0...

Hi,

After reading your site for a few days, I just want to say that you all have really impressed me with the quality of discussion and your eagerness to contribute. I just upgraded from Video Factory 1.0 to Vegas Video 3.0 based largely on your recommendations.

I'm having a big problem with this, however. I had installed the demo version of VV 3.0, and had made a 4-minute video that I had spent a good amount of time on. Due to the constraints of the demo, I couldn't save my work. So I kept my computer and the program running for 3 days :) When I upgraded, the program had to restart. Before restarting, it gave me the option of saving my work, which I did.

Now when it opened up again, I tried to open my work and it couldn't find my file. I did a windows search, which brought up my file in the "Recent" folder. However when I clicked on it, I was told that "the item that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so the shortcut will no longer work properly.

There are also some internet shortcuts that have the same file name, but when I try to open them in VV3 I'm told that the file cannot be opened (no big surprise there).

Where did my work go???

Lizard,

Do a search on your disk for *.veg files. If you can't find any, look for *.veg.bak files (I'm pretty sure that's what the backups are called, but I can't check right now since I'm in Win98 at the moment can't access my NTFS drives). If you can't find either one of those file extensions, then there's nothing you can do.

I actually ended up answering my own question the other night... I figured I'd post it in the rare event that someone else encounters the same problem.

I just happened to go into Preferences in VV3. One of the options there is to pick which folder is your temp folder. It then had the location of the folder. I had to cut and paste this location into Windows Explorer, since I couldn't click on it, but got to it and there were several temp files with long strings of numbers as the file name. I guess that's why my searches for the actual file name I had given it didn't turn up anything.

So yeah, doing it my way was pretty convuluted... I should have just searched for the file type instead of the file name.

Happily though, everything was still there under the temp file... PHEW!!!
