big projects,Vegas 14: audio stuttering, poor performance, mouse

I have been finding that since Vegas 13 on and now including Vegas 14, I am not able to build large audio projects without using an unacceptably large cache for my sound card. Big caches mean sluggish performance, as the computer must read ahead before it will play or process.

I record audio at 48k/24 bit, and use Waves plugins. My typical projects are around 20 recorded tracks but can range up to 32 tracks. I do location recording, so track lengths are typically 50 minutes each, usually in two sets for a total of 90 to 120 minutes. I break these down into song segments, and then create sub-mixes for main groups (eg drums, strings).

I tend to apply plugins as efficiently as I can, but every channel has EQ, busses have compresssion, and 2 reverb sends. Nothing that I think is excessive. I don't use convolution reverbs, these kill my system.

What I find is that within a short while of working on a project (editing, mixing, overdubbing, etc), performance starts to become very sluggish, and also ANY movement of my mouse on the screen will cause audio playback to stutter. If I increase the buffer cache to its maximum size (my Quad Pro card will allow 2 k), it will play back, but I can barely work on a project, it takes so long to buffer.

I have a latest gen i7 6700 Intel processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 video card and 16 gb RAM and SSD drive. Windows 10 Home. It's a new computer, only has Windows and Reaper installed on it.

I Googled comments on this, and found others are having the same problem. One recommended using Reaper.

As a test, I built the exact same project on both platforms, and before long, Vegas was stuttering. I continued to build my project with Reaper, and never did hit a point where it caused any performance problems.

I initially conducted this experiment a year ago using Vegas 13 on a much older computer, and then upgraded to 14 hoping that Magix has addressed this issue. My experience shows that they have not. I submitted a report, and the response was to reinstall the latest build. I have done this, no difference.

It seems to me that Vegas has a serious audio engine performance issue, especially compared to Reaper.

At this point, I am no longer using Vegas for audio work and have grown proficient using Reaper, although I do miss Vegas, which I have used since Vegas 2, and am familiar with.

Anybody else here having this same experience?

Most audio DAWs have the option to pre-render FX heavy audio tracks. That would probably help in your case if Magix included such a feature.

Yes I have experienced it too. An edit with sfx ,score and vocal tracks as well as the video get's bogged pretty quickly, but the worst is the out of sync issues. I found all you can do is play with the buffering setting til you find a goldilocks setting, or at least a compromise. ryclark's suggestion of freezing is good, in fact I'd like to freeze track groups! That could help a lot.🎼
