Cool idea!!!

It would have to be a truncated method to trash out the sound, though. Because if it used a dithering method, it would only reduce the frequency response and dynamic range.

Exactly. The trashier the better. I might need to write one myself with the DX developers kit unless one pops up :)

There's a couple I know of. I use the one in the old Hyperprism DX pack I got long ago. Goes by the great name of Sonic Decimator.

There's also some freeware VST ones floating about - I have 'mda Degrade'.

Hope that helps.

Izotope Trash -- will add some amazing destoration --

also Izotope Ozone -- has bit reduction feature.

You could render a track to 8-bit wav in Vegas. But that's maybe not trashed enough?

You can easily reduce bit depth in properties (soundForge) for the file.
You can change sample rate down to 8kHz, and bit depth to 8bit.
That should make it sound totally trashed. I guess this was what you aimed for?

No, I'd like a controllable plugin that doesn't reduce sample rate and gives me a range of bit depths.

If you have a VST wrapper to run VST pluggins in Vegas, there are a number of free VST effects for bit reduction and similar 'lo-fi' fx.

I quite like the sound of this one:

Reducer 2

and of course VST plugs are all fully automatable. Wish they had native support but most are fine within a VST>DX wrapper.

Spin Audio have a free VST wrapper HERE although it is a bit old.
