Is there a way of exporting single frames (bmp or jpg format) from an avi file?

you can copy a snapshot to the Windows clipboard using the button on the upper right video preview window. Snap shot size is dependent on Video Preview window size. Paste that image into Photoshop (or whatever) and you are all set.
