BiZzaRRe problem !@@#$

last nite, I was recording a bass part. It went Bass cab ( 4 x 10 swr ) to D-112 to Neve 1081 mic pre to DBX 160SL to RME ADI DS analog to digital converter channel 1. From there into the PC thru an RME 9652. The signal was recorded in vegas, and WHILE recording ( because of the way vegas monitoring works) the signal went back out the ADI's Digital to analog converter channel 1 back to my console channel 1, on the input channels of the console.

Also there was a DI, from an SWR head's DI out into a Neve 1272 into a DBX 160 SL into channel 2 of the ADI and coming out of the DAC of channel 2 of the ADI

I gotta mention this console as it may or may not have some bearing. We just got this sucker and Im giving back the soundcraft ghost. Its a Trident series 65 28 input channels x 24 busses by 24 monitor channels.

It sounded GREAT! really really really GREAT!!! clean and clear, tons of hi's and lows, yet enough body to carry it thru. I was overjoyed

now for playback ( once vegas has ASIO I wont have to do this, but) I took the master stereo out of vegas and fed them to the spdif outs of a 9652. From there it goes into an Alesis Masterlink, then back to monitor channels 1 and 2 of the trident.

this is always how I do things, except with the ghost I would send the masterlink back to the 2 track a input of the ghost. The trident doesnt allow you to use the 2 track return and the mix buss at the same time, so thats why I had to use two channels of the tridents monitor section.

anyway. when playing back the recorded bass signal, it was distorted! We had him play and we listened and all was fine, but again the siganl coming off of vegas was distorted! None of the other tracks were.

Because the signal when we hear it for recording is going thru both the ADC and DAC, we WERE listening to the track after it had gone thru the computer, at least the soundcard as there is no direct analog path from the adc to the dac.

what the hell could be wrong???

I've had something similar.

Because on Vegas tracks, the FX on a track are Pre Fader, and the FX on the busses are Post... sometimes the gain structure is a mess, and distortion pops up somewhere.

Try lowering the gain on the actual event in the timeline (a hidden line at the top of each object.)

See if that solves the problem.

We need a fix for this problem, so we can swap the tracks and busses between pre or post fader. 3.0D or 4.0 preferably please!!

nice outboard btw. I've got an orginal restored AKG C12 running through a Manley Voxbox at the moment. The sound is awesome! don't wanna give them back.

Yeah, for a guy that criticizes Harman International products he sure does own a lot of them. I guess Harman must be doing something right....huh pipe?

DBX was great before harman came along. Soundcraft's Ghost was frozen once Harman came along, no more work or even the OPTION to buy automation for it. Eventide was doing fine before harman came along. But Digitech got WAY better when harman got all the great fx companies, then all of a sudden " dumbed down " the stuff so it wouldnt compete with other lines. But yeah, I own a LOT of Harman stuff, and I bet a LOT of harman stuff I own I dont even know is harman stuff.

What stuff on that list is harman BTW ? And what does IMC own now ?
