My AVI files are perfect when viewed with "Play Media", but when I drop them in the timeline, up to 100 frames are black video. Audio is OK. The problem seems to come and go and varies in frame count. Usually it occurs in the center third of the clips. Any ideas?
I think the recent thread had to do with black frames in mpg.
I only recently had my first encounter with the problem described in the present thread (i.e., THIS thread) --- unexpected strings of black frames within AVI files.
I noticed two such black-strings just before I was going to begin a final render (still to AVI) of a very long project (1-1/2 hours). Lucky I saw them before, not after, the render!
It's possible that I did something wrong that "caused" those blackouts, but I can't imagine what it would have been. I'm responding here just to keep the topic alive, & to indicate that the original poster isn't alone!

i get the same thing too. the input file is perfect, output file has some black frames. they are different frames for different renders, too. i am outputting uncompressed, so there is no output codec being used. just discovered this, will go try to figure it out now. argh!
A few black frame issue have been reported in the past.
One is the added black frames in between edits on the timeline. VV sometimes adds a space between media that is dropped in. You have to zoom all the way in to notice it before you render. (Actually this was being looked into - never any word on any upcoming fixes)
Another thread I remember was exaclty as you describe - someone had random black frames inserted when they rendered. You would have to do a search but if I remember they had to re-render out that section and it solved the problem. It was possible they used SuperSample as well.
Frame serving can cause black frames..why I do not know. I have had it happen a few times where the end result sees audio being fine but black frames at the end of a frame served piece. (Satish plug in)
Many months ago a black frame issue was brought up in relationship to how all other NLE's handle the frame rate. If I remember someone was finding black frames at the end of a render - at the end of a piece of media. It seems VV is the only NLE that has the correct frame rate and all other NLE's have been compinsating for it. At least this was the overall feel of that thread. Thusly the black frames were being generated by VV, not because of a "bug" in VV but because of an overall incorrect frame rate in all other NLE's generated media.
Maybe some of these are the issues causing your black frames. Best bet is to do a search for these other threads.
well the source files say divx 5.1 in vegas. they have no black frames to begin with, it is only after output when they appear. they also appear when on the timeline as well. i tried outputting wiht various codecs, even uncompressed, all with the same results. i noticed that in the output window, the frames slow way down, and the output framerate actually changes. i'm not sure what it changes to, it was too fast to look, but it strays from the 29.97 that my project was in.
