Blackscreen & crashing after replacing a (.mov) video

rolbi04 wrote on 10/17/2016, 2:48 PM

Hello all ! :)

I'm working on a huge project, spend 100+ hours of editing and in the last step I encountered a big problem..

I have a trouble with replacing the video with a original[.mov] one ( the org. file was recorded in 4K, so i had to render it first to 1080p to  be able to smoothly edit this file). At the beginning everything seems fine, I can replace file,  play  it, everything seems to be perfect, but when I try to replace another files, vegas either crashes ,or my replaced files get black in preview ( and in render).

I'm using vegas pro 13 x64. Tried turning off gpu acceleration, tried the copy-paste method, reinstalling quicktime but nothing helped... note that back in 1 month time , when I was rendering the original 4K file to 1080p, everything went fine, had no trouble with playing or rendering it ( i even tried replacing this 1080p file with the original 4K ,and back then it worked fine).

Anybody have ideas what to do?

Thanks in advance !

Rather than manually create lower resolution of the 4K, then manually replace them, you can instantly create Proxy in Project Media tab. This will create 720p proxy besides the 4K version. I did this for DJI Osmo's footage.

FWIW: I had a heck of a time working with 4K quicktime video in Vegas 13.  The proxies it generated were rather large, and it eventually froze up anyway.

I ended up running the originals through Handbrake, and creating the proxies with Handbrake too.

Divide your project up into smaller "sub" projects simply by "save as" several times and deleting part of your timeline. In each of these projects remove all unused media from the project using the lightning bolt icon at the top left of the project media window, then save the project, then see if you can replace the media without trouble. Then transcode from the original media into a more Vegas-friendly intermediate media format before rebuilding a new full project from the sub-projects.

Your best chance of avoiding black frames is to do your render as the very first thing after restarting Vegas.

Besides the format of your orignal media, what is your final delivery medium and how long is your project? This will affect your best choice of intermediate media format. Sony XAVC Intra is possibly a good choice if your original media is 8-bit.

Hmm dont know really how to check that.. i am a bit uneducated about these apple inventions ;P

@Nick , thanks for an idea, will try it for sure.

// Project is 1.5 hour long, but i am still thinking about a final medium, probably .mp4 , because it is (mainly) for youtube

What camera has shoot the 4K files? Or was it an external recorder?

XAVC I is capable of up to 10bit. The playback capabilities of XAVC I are not so great as if one would take Cineform. Depends on the format, but UHD 50p XAVC I from my FS7 is not so easy in the playback in Vegas (even not with my 8 core system).

I have got these .mov files from different people, but i quess everything was recorded with an iphone, so i quess it is not pro-res.

/// small update, suddenly I've got black screen in preview(and render)  on every single .mov file I got. I did re-installed quicktime and this might be a reason( but it should not be lol). Also I deinstalled all my additional plugins, but none of them were in use in this project. Damn it is getting strange! :< Any ideas guys?

iPhone would be H.264 MOV.

Use MediaInfo to read your file. Very useful to analyze the media here.

For Youtube, here's the suggestion codec settings.

Philip Bloom shared one of iPhone 6S 4K video sample on his blog site (look for WeTransfer widget). So, I assume Rolbi04's project is using the same iPhone6S ?

> Putting this media on VP13/14 really painful... the playback suffers a lot.

I tried experiment with the free Catalyst Browse and it can read the file easily, but can't convert this to XAVC-L or XAVC-S, because no 4K template settings! Only XAVC Intra, but that changes resolution to 4096x2160 (NOT 3840x2160). Only AVC/AAC Internet Templates. (Convert to DPX is not a solution)

Probably working with just one / few MOV media has no issue like my experiment, but when working with hundreds of media, the Vegas Pro got 'tired'.

OK  guys, I used handbrake to replace these 4K files, but as i mentioned I have encountered another problem - now, other (1080p) .mov files started to appear black ( it was perfectly normal before). Damn vegas.

Wolfgang S. wrote on 10/19/2016, 3:02 PM

I have converted iphone files with TMPGenc to XAVC-S before editing the footage in Vegas. Worked fine here. So maybe for such a conversion and the replacement of the mov files it is important to use another tool?

Try using other than MOV format / container. Perhaps Sony MXF format / Sony XAVC.
