And what about just going to 1080P with mpeg 2 or 4? What if Main Concept upgrades to that and turns the market another direction?
If everybody's player would play m2t files burned on DVD 4.7 discs we wouldn't need Bluray or HD-DVD, just triple layer discs.

Or better still Internet distribution with playing from a fast Hard Drive. That's why I believe even if we get Blu-ray up and going its life will be short. Our songs are web to ipod now and our video will be this way in a short time. Also portable HDs are getting cheaper and smaller and they can take the place of expensive DVD technology anyway.

And the big bonus - ANY FORMAT is available!

Blu-ray is dead - killed during delivery by Hollywood and their schizophrenic need to control the users. They go way beyond copy prevention and honest digital restrictions management.

You can already buy DVD players (red laser) that contain the Divx and WM9-HD decoders for under $100. (I just bought a Zenith - repackaged LG player for $50 at CompUSA, and I'll be testing some HDV footage when I get some time.)

So, shoot in HDV, render to DIVX or WM9-HD, and burn a 4.7Gb disc. Add $100 to your price and deliver a new DVD player with the product.

The IO Data Avel LinkPlayer 2 plays .m2t files in HD resolution. It will stream them off your computer network to the TV. But it's limited to 19 Mbps (I find 15 is most reliable) bitrate for the video stream and 192 kbps for the audio stream (vs. HDV which is at 384 kbps). So it means you have to re-encode your video.

It also plays WMV-HD and DIVX-HD.

It's been quite buggy since its release in late 2004, but now it does quite a few things well (still some bugs though).
