Blu Ray - what bit rate do you use?

While my blu ray distribution has always been limited to low demand, I have a new project that is presenting me with question... "Two disc or one disc distribution".

I'd like to hear some feed back on what bit rate that you use. The pros and cons. I 've listed a few additional talking points.

* 8 bit Mbps vs 25 Mbps (or anything higher than 8) Is there a visible difference or is it subjective.

* Is there play back issues with a higher bit rate across the spectrum of different players?

I still have a concern that BD-R compatibility is less than DVD-R has become. Any insight is appreciated.

If using MPEG2, I use 25mbp. If using AVCHD, I use 18mbp. 8mbp would not be a consideration for BD...that's DVD quality.

I appreciate the feedback. A thought comes to mind though. Is it not the resolution that determines SD vs HD? It's my understanding that the streaming services such as Netflix are stream at a relatively low bit rate.

Dach, your mind is wrestling with apples and oranges in concepts.

Consider this, take a top-notch quality source, compress it with a highly sophisticated compressor, and then carefully place it in mass distribution like DVD. Here is an example - Hollywood takes 4 whole movies, compresses the daylights out of them, and then puts them on one DVD that you buy at $2.95. Take this home and view it.

Compare the quality of the screen play to your homecamera shooting SD Widescreen and then use Vegas to edit, and DVDAPro to author it to 30 minute DVD with the compressor that is given you. Does this look as good?

Arthur gave you the correct specs.

It depends SO MUCH on your source, which you have not even attempted to describe. A slide show will do just fine under 1 Mbps. Fast action may require the maximum allowable delivery bitrate. And your eyes should be the judge, not someone's blind opinion.

Some off-brand players will stutter on normal movies, or on a cloudy day. Quality equipment should not be affected. Do your homework.
