blurred boarder question

watson wrote on 2/12/2003, 1:03 PM
I have a clip/composition that I wanted to place jumpbacks at the top and bottom, like letterbox.
How would I blur just the bottom edge of the top letterbox jumpback and just the top edge of the bottom letterbox jumpback.
I hope this makes sense.
In other words I want the letterbox(jumpback)edges to blend into the center composition with blur and not have the other three edges blur as well.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Hi Watson,

You might try using a Vegas generated background (checkerboard or gradient) to create a white bar across the midsection of the frame with soft edges. Then you can use that as a mask for the jumback, or inverted as a mask for the video.

So what you are saying is create a mask from generated media for the center of my composition. then let the center video track show through in the middle with blurred edges top and bottom of this middle section.

Questions are:
I still don't get a blurred top and bottom edge or (blend effect).

How do I make the generated media a mask?
and blend or blur the edges?

Sorry if this is obvious to you but I am still very green.
Thank you.

Here a windows media file of the project I am talking about. Notice the line between the top and bottom jumpbacks. This is the line I would like to blend.

This is a project for learning purposes.
Thank you very much for your help.

Hi watson,

Here's a brief tut on a letterbox mask -

I looked at the file, it looks like you have two tracks with backgrounds, so you might need two masks, using just one grad for each.

Marty,
Thank you so much for spending the time to illustrate this for me. In the process I have learned how to properly use these features.
Man, I love this program.
Marty you are a kind and awesome teacher!
It worked out just how I imagined it should.
If you want, I will put it up for you to see.
It still needs work but your tutorial has made a big improvement.
Cheers,
W
