Blurring the blue

A friend gave me the advice to give (still) digital pictures a small gaussian blur in the blue channel in photoshop. I've tried that with good results. And I've also tried that on video in Vegas. It looks fine, especially will it make a difference in dark conditions.

For what reason do you blur the blue channel?

Often the blue channel is full of dark dots.
