Boosting Audio in Vegas4 - Tips?

Hi, from a recent seminar taped w/camcorder (from camera 2), our audio is a bit low -- what's the best way to boost the audio gain without distortion/noise? From within Vegas? (if so, how?) ... or, using 3rd party audio editor:

I use cool edit pro/2k for audio editing (since bought by adobe), would that be the best tool, eg a 5db gain and use a lowpass filter to cut noise up at 15K+, or any other tips on how to boost audio signal from weak DV source ?

I know how to use audio volume envelopes and fades to cut down current audio, but I don't know how to boost gain in the audio using vegas..

thx much,

ken

At the beginning of the sound track there is a slider volume control. Also if you have the master bus activated there is a slider control there also. If you have Sound Forge its a piece of cake. Also check your audio FX chain for presets by right clicking the left sound track thingy at the beginning of the track.

I don't believe this. You have Vegas and you want to use something else for audio manipulation?
But to answer the question: 1. To simply rise the audio level you an do as JJKizak suggests. Or rightclick the event and choose Normalize under Switches.
2. You could also use the Graphic Dynamics FX. Play around with it for a while and discover what it does.
Of course, Sound Forge is a great audio tool, but so is Vegas. Actually, it is an audio tool first and foremost.

The Volume Control?? Hey that's TOO easy. But it's right - thanks. Boy do I feel like Homer doh! now .. lol... thanks!

Thanks, appreciate it.. I'm very new to Vegas, just did my first DVD with it:

You guys just earned a free copy each, email me with your shipping address if you want one... ken@daytradinguniversity.com ...
I'm also sending free ones to Spot, Troxxler, and Gary Kleiner, so email me w/shipping addresses, thx..
and Vegas is excellent... however I'm new to using audio in it, though I've done hundreds of hours of editing with cool edit 2k/pro, so that's why I'd use it first, eg I'm good with it. Vegas for audio, still a newbie... learning from Spot's DVDs is great ... though I still need lots of practice... thanks for the tips!

Last question:
The audio is technically a mono signal, though it's showing up in both L/R audio tracks in Vegas. Will I save any rendered DVD space if I save it as a mono signal by using the "Combine" feature, and choosing a Track Render in mono format? Will that degenerate the audio, or no difference?

If you want some sound to come out of both speakers, I doubt you'll save anything.

How do you set up Vegas to automatically open up the Cool Edit when you right click on the audio track and select "Open in Audio Editor". I set it up under preferences, but when Cool Edit opens up it asks me for the format and I set it to 48000, 16Bit Stereo, then some other stupid screen comes up and I dont know what to select. Help ??

Right click the audio file, choose Normalize. That should get you started.
