Borders on video

Hello all and thank you for any help. I've tried searching for help but have come up empty.

I have created a video clip to use as a menu for my final dvd project. It is much like the mural that windows dvd maker creates - a full screen main video clip under, with 9 smaller videos (moved into position with pan and crop) fading in and out in sections like "the brady bunch". The smaller videos edges are too sharp and I want to blur them a little. I select one of the smaller clips, select the border effect, and it creates the border but around the main full size video, not the smaller pan and cropped video. Manipulating the properties of the border for the smaller video seems to only apply to the full size one. The smaller video only gets affected when the main video border is shrunk enough to finally reach the small video.

Sorry, hard to explain but in short I can't seem to soften the edges of the smaller videos. I've watched youtube videos which seem to have no problem with this but I'm stumped.

Thanks all

Assuming that you have your smaller video on separate tracks, It sounds as though you just don't have the right events selected when you apply the effect.

Well, by events I assume you mean video?

Yes. The smaller videos are on separate tracks. I tested this effect by starting a new project and doing the following:

1. Added two video media files to the media pool.
2. Added one of the videos to the timeline. Left it full screen size.
3. Added the second video to a video track "above" the one added in step 2 above.
4. Used pan and crop to resize the video from step three making it smaller and just leaving it in the middle of the screen.
5. I can now see in the preview screen the full size video with a smaller one in the middle. I can see both at the same time.
6. I select the video track that contains the resized video, select the effect button shown at the end of the track, select border, and select bezel from the drop down menu.
7. The bezel effect has been applied TO THE FULL SIZE VIDEO, NOT THE SMALL ONE. When I use the size slider button, it only resizes a bezel effect on the full size video, not on the small video.

I don't get it. I thought I screwed something up on my "complicated" version so I did the above experiment with a new project and only two videos. Same result - I can not seem to apply the effect only to the smaller resized video. Ugh. Any suggestions. Is there some button/preference/option that has effects only apply to the full window?

Strangely, I tried some other effects which seem to work ok. For example, I added the sony film effects, selected "very old film" and it applied it only to the small resized video, however, when I moved the "grain" slider for this effect, it applied it to the large video. Go figure. Anyone?

Thanks for any help

Small update...

I thought maybe that the order in which things are applied make a difference. I did the following:

1. I added the video tracks as per above.
2. I applied the border effect to the video (track 1. The other video is track 2). Effect is applied correctly.
3. I then used pan and crop to resize the video in track 1. The bevel effect did not "follow" the resized video but then immediately became applied to the full size video on track 2.

Huh? By the way, there is no effect listed in the chain when I look at the video on track 2.

Sorry I can't help. The effect works correctly for me when I follow the same procedure.

**Update**

Borders effect still doesn't work. Tried it on Vegas Movie Studio 9, same thing.

I did, however, install the NewBlue effects that came with HD 10 when I first installed and noticed that they installed a PiP effect. Using this I was able to achieve the softening of the edges effect I was looking for.

Does anyone know if installing the NewBlue Suite of effects (described as some sort of free bonus) will disable or have a negative effect on the built in ones??
