BORIS CC 7: “missing” filters in the Vegas version

Jøran Toresen wrote on 10/16/2010, 6:01 AM
Based on the filter lists on the Boris web site, I have compared which and how many of the filters (effects) that are included in the After Effects and Vegas versions of Boris Continuum Complete 7.

Total
There are 192 filters in the AE version and 128 filters in the Vegas version: 64 filters (33%) are missing in BCC for Vegas 10. The missing filters are:

Wipe Transitions
All of the 8 Wipe Transitions filters are included in BCC for Vegas.

OpenGL
Seven (41%) out of 17 of the OpenGL filters are not included in BCC for Vegas:

* 3D Extruded Image Shatter
* Morph - new
* Partcle Array 3D - new
* Pin Art 3D - new
* Tile Mosaic
* Warp - new
* Video Morph – new

As you can see, 64 filters (33%) are missing in BCC for Vegas 10 compared to the After Effects version.

Maybe it is not possible to implement some of the filters in the Vegas version? Maybe the developers didn’t have time enough to implement a Vegas versions of all filters? Maybe some of the filters are not required in the Vegas version?

Anyway, comments from the Boris team and other Vegas users would be appreciated.

While I don't think some of the missing filters are all that crucial for most people, there are some filters there that are just EXCEPTIONAL and it's sad they are not included.

Things like the Morphing I am sure would be missed, and the Denoiser is pretty darn good. The Pan Zoom might be a conflict with Vegas' own, but it works GREAT. I just used it for a project in a different editor and was stunned at the quality versus using the Vegas native one.

I'm sure the uprez would have been appreciated also.

Seems like you are getting a lot less product for probably the same money.

That's not correct. There are 128 FX plug-ins, 7 Transforms, and 9 Transition plug-ins making the total 144. That's 75% of what's in AE so only 25% is missing.

Yea, but the price is adjusted for that. BCC7 for Vegas costs 60% of the AE version ($595 vs $995) and includes 75% of the plug-ins. That's still a good deal.

I would love to see some of the other plug-ins too but the price would undoubtedly have to go up accordingly.

Johnny, $595 is the introductory price for the Vegas version, the regular price is the same as the After Effects version. I quote from the e-mail I got from Boris:

“Save $400 for a Limited Time: Get BCC 7 for Vegas Pro @ just $595 (regularly $995)!”

By the way, I don’t want to criticize Boris. I think it is great that Boris and other companies supports the new Video Effects Plug-in SDK.

WOW! I didn't realize that. That won't be a good deal then. They really should adjust the price based on the functions provided. Better buy now! ;-)

Johnny said: “There are 128 FX plug-ins, 7 Transforms, and 9 Transition plug-ins making the total 144.”

I have not installed Boris CC 7 yet (but I’m going to purchase the product). I counted 128 FX plug-ins. Can you tell me more about the “7 Transforms, and 9 Transition plug-ins”? And, are these 16 extra plug-ins not included in the After Effects version of BCC7?

When I talked to Boris, there are about 30 more items to be added to the Vegas version. They will be offered as a patch. When they are all available in the package the price will be increased.

The 7 transforms are what Vegas calls 2-to-1 transforms and are found on the Compositing Mode menu under Custom... They are:

The 9 Transitions are:

You really should download the 15-day trial and check it out. While some of these Vegas already has, it's still a LOT of new functionality that Vegas never had before.

That you get more in the AE version than the Vegas version for the same money is hardly a surprise. The market for the Vegas version has to be dramatically smaller than the AE version. AE is the defacto low budget standard compositor for all NLEs be they from Apple, Avid, Adobe, Sony or anyone else.

AE does bring way more host functionality, especially with Expressions. I have certainly considered buying Boris plugins for AE, I would never consider buying them for Vegas. That said I'm no plugin junky and have only bought a couple for AE as most of what I've needed to get done in it I've managed to do without extra plugins.

Johnny. All the Wipe Transitions filters you mention are included in my list over filters in the Vegas version of BCC 7.
Here are the link to the Boris web site listing all filters in BCC 7 for After Effects and Vegas:

http://www.borisfx.com/Adobe/bccae/filter_list.php
http://www.borisfx.com/sony/bccsvp/Filter-List.php

Five of seven “2-to-1 transforms” are included in my list over filters in the Vegas version of BCC 7. As you can see: BCC Boost Blend is not in the Vegas filter list on the Boris web site, but obviously is a part of BCC 7 for Vegas (since you say so). BCC Polar Displacement is not listed for After effect or Vegas.

So my conclusion is correct: About 33% (62-64)of the filters in the After effect version of BCC 7 are not included in the Vegas version.

Johnny: ”You really should download the 15-day trial and check it out. While some of these Vegas already has, it's still a LOT of new functionality that Vegas never had before.”

I have download BCC 7 but I haven’t had the time to test it. And yes, I will purchase the product.

Remember all those filters that are missing would probably be in Boris Red Vegas version.

Does anyone know if the BCC Stabilize was added to the BCC 7 package for Vegas?

I am using the BCC Chroma Keyer in V11 64 bit (it is terrific, IMHO), but want to be sure Stabilize is included before I spring for the whole package.

Also, I see reference to BCC 8 coming for After Effects. Is it coming for Vegas, too?

TIA,
Fred

Fred,

Optical Stabilizer is part of BCC7 an shows up in Vegas 11.

BCC8 will be available for Sony Vegas sometime after it is made available for AE.

You might also be entitled to a free BCC8 upgrade if you buy BCC7 now, you might want to double check that.

I spoke with Boris support today. Officially, the optical stabilizer is not yet supported in V11. It will be a free update when it is.

I also asked them about BCC 8. They are working on the Vegas version and it will be a free upgrade if BCC 7 is purchased now.

I found BCC 7 at B and H for US$594 and ordered it.
