I guess it depends on your level of "getting by" - from the basics, I used the tutorials in the Vegas Video 3.0c (updates section) to teach high school kids how to edit in less than 90 min. Very good walk through of the basics of Vegas, including timeline use, cutting, ripple, basic compositing and text manipulation. VASST has some great books and DVD's out, although you may wish to wait for Vegas 8 updates.

The manual is a great resource however I'd look at the Vegas 6 Editing Workshop by Douglas Spotted Eagle (the 7 book fell in the middle of publisher buyout and 8 has not been released) if you're looking for step by step, hands on book tutorials. I myself just pulled in the elements of a project that I had done in my previous NLE and forced myself to learn how to build it in Vegas - was much, much easier this time around though.

Don't forget the forums here, too. You'll find much of what you need already has been covered, but don't hesitate to ask if you can't find it. There's a few vegheads who don't sleep much :)

I'd suggest working on real-world projects with it.

I find that if you work on the sorts of video projects you usually do, then you will find that you rapidly learn the techniques and tricks most important to your application.

If the project is for hire/work then even better. It's a big motivation. I have found that I learned most working this way.

"Would the best way be to learn it be print the whole manual and go thru it page by page?"

Yes, without a doubt. If you just play with different projects you may never find the easier way to do some things.

You don't have to learn all the features, just be aware that they exist.

Also, each time you read about a new feature, try it out. Then you will reinforce your knowledge of it.
