Boxed version equity

"The advantage of having a box in a business environment, is to keep it on display to show your clients walking through the door. This shows them you are not a thief and just using stolen copies of the software. Some clients actually do ask and will walk out the door if you have no proof. Why should clients pay you, if you wont pay for the software for your job? Some clients have that mind set, and I have run into a few of them in my area."

What bizarro world do you live in? Client's asking to see a box, or they're outta there? I doubt this very seriously. Besides, give me an hour, and I'll make a realistic box that would fool most people. So that's just silly.

While I do still prefer to get a box, it's no big deal really. Spiffy boxes are meant to grab attention for retail outlets. Obviously, if you've already agreed to buy the software online, a spiffy box isn't that important.

no less silly then a client NOT choosing a vegas user because they don't use FCP, Avid or Premiere.

I've read this more than once in the audio mags. If you're using Waves I can see why too.
I'd also point out that there's a lot of dodgy installs of Vegas out there, more than once I've been asked for advice about Vegas from someone who clearly hadn't paid for it. Not that the cost of Vegas is a big cost to my business but when someone tells me how cheap they bid jobs and they have Vegas, PPro and Avid and... it's kind of nice to think there are actually clients out there who might care.

After all some of mine are giving me unfetted access to their assets worth significant sums of money, knowing that I do take copyright seriously and pay my dues is one less hurdle to getting work.

I, too, bought the physical version, expecting it to arrive in a box, like the kind they showed on the website.

I didn't expect to get it in the cheap bubblewrap package they sent it in.

Sony - hey guys listen up, I can PAY you an extra $5 or whatever if you really want it, to send me the doggone box.

The reason I want the box is, it makes it easier for me to store and find the disc when I need it... I could've burned a dvd and saved it in a cheap plastic baggie myself.. sheesh.

Anybody have any ideas re how we can get the box? That was cost-cutting that didn't make sense, and failed to live up to customer expectations. When I bought the BOXED version, I expected it to come in the BOX that they advertised. Imagine that.

Previously I've received each new version of Vegas in its commercial packaging and expected that this time also, which was the reason for spending the extra money. What actually arrived provides no (well maybe a tiny bit) extra value over just downloading. The manuals do mention some of the additions (e.g. burning Blu-ray) but are essentially repeats of previous "how to get started" manuals (as you'd expect) so present a little added value. But all the real information is in the e-manual, so there is no actual value in paying the extra. I guess you could argue that the box is just a piece of printed cardboard (little intrinsic value) and just bulks up transport (extra carbon burnt, and all), so Sony are in fact saving the planet. If they had been quite clear about that I would have downloaded and saved the planet even more.

Great. I just ordered the Vegas + Cinescore bundle using the "Packaged" option - not the "download + mailed components" option - and I was expecting to receive the boxes. Especially with what they charged me for shipping.

Why in the world would I *not* pick the "download + mailed components" option if they were just going to mail me the exact same thing? I figured the money they saved on me not downloading it went into the box!

Now I have to WAIT before I can use V8 *and* I get no benefit for doing so.

Nice.

i payed the same amount of $$ when I download+mailed as if I just did the mailed, no download.
Sunflux wrote on 9/18/2007, 3:59 PM
Well, I have to say that shipping was FAST at least. CInescore came in a huge box, even the two bonus themes came in mini boxes... but Vegas came in a plastic bag. Oh well, guess I have to store it in V7's box. Hope they don't expect me to do that with V12! ;-)
CorTed wrote on 9/18/2007, 4:10 PM
Well I was the lucky one and received Cinescore plus 2 theme packs all nicely in their respectie boxes. And Vegas 8 in it's box as well.
Maybe since I am a first time user to them (not upgrading) is why they gave me the box?

Yes, as a new user I would STRONGLY hope you'd get a box... it's just that us upgrade users like boxes too! :-)

Australian posters havent mentioned GST. When I bought the boxed V4 I was charged GST (fair enough) by customs, but there was an over $100 "handling charge" on top????
Is the situation still the same?

No GST on the upgrade package.
In fact been ages since I was hit with any charges from customs.

The 'free' limit has been increased and I have my ABN number with customs / the freight companies, so maybe I get a Get Out of Jail Free card.

When I purchased the Vegas-DVD 7 upgrade and Cinescore they sent boxes for both. That was the first time I had gotten a new box since Vegas 4, ACID 2, and Sound Forge 6. It was nice to finaly have some Sony branded boxes on my shelf instead of the Sonic Foundry boxes that looked out dated. I had hoped with the Vegas 7 box, Sony had changed their policy on upgrade shipments. Should have assumed not when Sound Forge 9 came in the bubble envelope like Vegas Pro 8 just did.

It would be nice if we had the option of spending the extra money to get a box if we really wanted it.

So... does this mean There is No way for an Upgrade customer to get the 'boxed' version?

I've been running the Trial and I'm now on my last week of both my trial & the $150 upgrade.

I too like to display my boxes for clients to see.
I think it's pretty impressive for them to walk in and see boxes of Sony, Adobe, Boris, Avid, Apple, etc. software. Without me saying a word about it... they know I'm using Professional Grade products and that's why I deliver professional results.

I feel that it also speaks to them and reiterates the fact that they can't just get their nephew (who has Movie Maker or iMovie) to deliver the same quality as me. <-- This is HUGE to me since it seems like everyone is a 'Video Editor' these days. All of the marketing is telling everyone they can do it themselves but there's No Way a Hobbyist can do what I do nor can they use the tools I do.

Having the box on display may be minuscule but I think it helps to set me and my services apart.

I want the Box!
[r]Evolution wrote on 10/22/2007, 4:30 PM
Called and ordered The BOXed version today. Any of the other options reportedly turns out to be the Manila/Bubblewrap combination.

I'll just run the Trial 'till it arrives... then Neatly position the box on the shelf beside my other Thousands of Dollars worth of pretty Cardboard Boxes.
farss wrote on 10/22/2007, 6:21 PM
Which option yields the boxed version?
Apart from buying a new full licence I don't know how one can ensure you get THE BOX.

Well, I just got mine today......first time ever since VV4 I did not get a box. Thin little package of two small books, obviously not a manual. Two key board cards and the disk. Disappointed. Yeah that's it......disappointed. So much for loyalty and being treated like you were appreciated.......

After upgrading to Vegas Pro 8, I upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 (FCP 6, Motion 3, Soundtrack Pro 2, Compressor 3, DVDSP 4, and Color).

That came in a box that is both useful as a sleeve for the massive, very well-written paper manuals inside, and very classy-looking because of its simple but elegant design.

If Madison was actually looking for packaging that would increase sales, that would be the one to give the ultimate flattery of imitation.

I'm confused on why Sony doesn't spend the extra dollars to send the software out in a box when you go with the download version. I honestly didn't read the website very well and just assumed I'd get the packaged software sent to me and I was surprised to get an envelope with the CD and manual in it and no box(yikes).

The Sony Vegas team is failing to understand the importants of image. I would highly recommend the Vegas team to attend a few presentations on the importants of image. By the Vegas team not providing a boxed version with the download option, it hurts the image of Vegas Pro.

Granted this isn't a huge deal but it is something people remember and will pass on to others. I have already told this story to a few fellow business partners and they too were surprised.

If it's that big of a cost, then at least give the customer the option to pay the additional 15 bucks for a pretty black looking box :)
[r]Evolution wrote on 10/23/2007, 12:11 PM
The option you need to select is 'Packaged Version'.

The Sony Rep (in Madison) that I ordered from explained that:
- The boxes are already made. Meaning the Bubble Wrap/Manila Envelopes are there... for those that choose 'Download + Shipped' & the 'Packaged Version' is there for those that choose to wait to receive a S/N.

The difference is :
- If you choose 'Packaged' you have to wait to get your S/N because it is in the Box. They do NOT know what it is.
- If you choose 'Download' your S/N is eMailed to you. The only thing you need is the Disc & Manuals.

Since both are already Boxed and sitting in the Warehouse waiting to be shipped... the shipper looks to see which one you get and ships it to you.

I'm expecting to get the 'Packaged' version.
I'll just continue the Trial till it ends... then Plug In my S/N when it arrives.

That Box should look really pretty on my shelf.

I must agree... the FCP Studio packaging, user manuals, etc... is pretty impressive. But I bet it costs a fortune to ship. My documents sit and never gets used... but the box sure is pretty.
ken c wrote on 10/23/2007, 12:35 PM
Agree - I had bought both the "packaged" plus download version because I was expecting to get a BOX, not some crummy envelope.

Sony, I'd pay an extra $15 for a REAL box, ok? sheesh.

Talk about impressive BOXING, if you get the Adobe Studio products, they come in a huge box with printed manuals, very pleasant and professional.

To have Vegas come in a cheap looking 10 cent envelope like you bought it from an ebay seller is just stupid and disappointing.

SONY - how can we get a real BOX with our software? I want one so that I can easily see WHERE my source install disk is; a lot of loose discs like what they shipped are easily lost. In a nice shelf box, it doesn't get lost. And it looks cool. Or it would, like my ADOBE boxed products.

HOLY SH_T!!!
I guess if you have nothing else to complain about, christ, complain about the box.
I mean, seriously, you guys need to get a life. Step away from this camera thing for a while. There's so much more happening in the world. A box? OMG!
[r]Evolution wrote on 10/23/2007, 4:10 PM
Actually... people ARE complaining about other things.
They are also praising what they feel is good.
(read the forums)

It's just that this thread is about the box.

What box?

My "boxed" set came in a clear plastic bag.

On the other hand, the bag is a pretty good idea. Boxes are employed to make a thin DVD and a thin manual look fatter and use up maximum shelf space.
