timeline at the cursor (all tracks) without having to have all the media selected. I think that I have done this in the past or maybe the Jägermeister has finally done me in.
You can also have all media UNselected. Just press CTRL-SHIFT-A and then press S.

Just position your timeline cursor and press "S" with the results as follows:
a. If you have any clips selected they are split
b. If you have no clips selected then the entire timeline is split
c. If you have selected a section of the timeline then the entire timeline is split at each end of the selection.
d. If you have selected a section of the timeline AND have selected clips then those clips are split at each end of the timeline selection.
