Brighten only dark areas of a video?

relaxvideo wrote on 5/12/2024, 3:56 AM

How can i brighten only the darker part of a video?
So i don't want to burn out the nice clouds in the sky, but the main theme was a little dark.

In Lightroom i can easily do this with a photo, but such filter exist in Vegas pro?
Levels, gamma, etc. don't do that.

There's several ways and Vegas intern tools to do that. From Color Curves to color grading to brightness & contrast etc.

If it's about correcting specific areas only, you'll probably have to work with masks. One way to do that is to copy the track or clip, put it above the original, create a (if needed specifically feathered) positive mask and correct the content of that mask only. You can reepeat that with as many layers you need, given that your footage isn't burnt out in the highlights sou you can recover the whites to the point that you need.

I personally really like Colorfast 2 by New Blue, as you can specifically define and separately work on the highlights, mids and shadows .

One way is to use Vegas' 'Brightness and Contrast' FX to brighten the image so that the main theme is what you want, and then use Vegas' 'Color Corrector (Secondary)' FX to pull back the highs and mids using that FX's 'Limit Luminance' and the masking controls (Low, High, Smooth) to limit the effect of this FX to the non-dark areas of the image. The result may be less satisfactory if the increase in brightness is more than light to moderate.

If you've got NewBlueFX's ColorFast 2, it's even easier using its Secondary Correction Shadow and Midtones controls.

Perhaps try Vegas's AI Z-Depth to create your mask, duplicate the event, place Z-Depth on the top track & brightness/contrast, level... whatever brightening effect on the second track.

I just tried it & it sort of worked only focusing on the darker areas but the camera is moving & light on the orig event changes so I got a bit of flickering with the mask, Just a thought..

No masking needed, just level darker parts with Level FX or Colour Curves FX, as @Dexcon described. Try using the presets for brighten darker parts to start with and learn by doing.

Color Curves -> Highlight/Shadows Preset

Easy as pie.

OFX Fill Light probably can help too.

Thank you, i will try the suggestions.
No, i don't want to do it with maskink+duplicating tracks.
I like a more easier method, with only a few clicks.

You can also try the RL Color Wheels, but I generally avoid them, because the brickwall cutoff points don't blend well with the rest of the image.

The Highlight/Shadow preset I suggested will taper the levels rather than show sharp endpoints. I question their usefulness of the RL Color Wheels.

@Dexcon - Yes - When I need to specify areas, using masks for attention, NBCF2 is my go-to tool. Flexible, quick, and accurate.

When you use a Level FX to brighten up darker parts, lighter parts like sky and clouds, are untouched.
