Bringing speach out in a mix with music

Hi all, I've got a video project with some random dialog and a lot of music. I'd like to limit the volume of the music when the dialog comes in automatically (sidechain compressor??). Can the compressor be triggered in this way or what do I have to do?

EDIT: Ok I've found out that what I'm looking for is a ducker. Does anyone know of a freeware plug in? Thanks, Andy

Is the speech on a separate track to the speech - if so you are correct.

However if the speech and music are mixed on an existing track, the EQ and/or manual volume envelope are probably the only way.

Geoff, thanks I found that one too. Several sites call it a freeware product but then on their page they offer a license for £15. Another option has disappeared from the net. It's called Ducker v0.1. The version number doesn't inspire confidence though! :)

I guess that I'll have to use an external audio editor and see how that works. Thanks for the assistance.
